Description Every year, sandhill cranes make their way through central Washington, stopping at farm fields to feed on leftover corn and grains, then spending the night at watering holes like the Columbia National Wildlife Refuge. Their awesome migration takes them through Canada and sometimes as far as Russia.

I spoke to some naturalists this past weekend and the peak isn't going to be until early April. Also, the burrowing owls aren't there yet.
BTW, I also found out that Conboy Lake National Wildlife Refuge is one of only two spots where there are nesting pairs. There are only 20 pairs at Conboy (couldn't find much info about the other location). We went there this past weekend and found 3 pairs, but they were all pretty far from the road.
Did you get to hear them? I love how they sound.

two things.
First, I used to live in South Florida and each winter we'd get all the birds that migrated south. Our triple wire, high electrical towers were FILLED with birds, each standing next to each other, for miles! It felt like a scene from "The Birds".

Second, you mentioned "sandhill" which took me back to my youthful haunts where, during the winter, everyone would go to sandhill to use their sleds or skis. Kind of silly really since the hill was merely about a ten foot rise. Very little incline to get up to speed. But, what do you want? Four year olds don't usually look at ten foot as being small. heh
