I'm so glad I got to see this wonderful work and the rest of your portfolio. This drawing happened to appear next to one of mine in the "More from Deviant Art" column. I was simply knocked out by the lifelike and incredibly subtle gradations of tone. Just marvelous!

Monika! Thank you so very much! I'm honored that you like my drawings, and fortunate that Sara appeared next to one of yours. I greatly admire your work as well, especially how you capture light and shadows. I love how you're able to achieve such a rich dark tone with your drawings. I've always been a little hesitant to go too dark, fearing that I might ruin a piece. But you do it so gracefully, it makes me want to try it.

PS, I truly appreciate that you've added me to your watch list. It means a great deal knowing someone with your talent enjoys my work. I look forward to seeing all your future art pieces as well!

I think you can certainly get there, you've got some great drawings yourself. Plus your digital 3D work is amazing and definitely something to be proud of.

Thank you so much! You're too kind!

I'm delighted that you mentioned the selection for the portrait. That's actually the first time anyone ever commented on that. With every portrait, I do like to spend some time researching, trying to find a photograph that captures the person. When drawing, I spend so much time examining the face and details to get it accurate, I want the source to be something I appreciate.

Zarakoda In reply to RayPelesko [2014-05-10 22:39:47 +0000 UTC]

I applaud you for looking so deeply into finding a picture that capture's someone's essence.Β  For me I feel like that's the heart of taking a reference photo... you have to find something that really draws you in, because ultimately that's going to be the subject matter of your final work.Β  You definitely get the final piece accurate with the details of peoples' face... it's certainly something I need to work on myself (I rush too much, just wanting to get done)... andΒ your focusΒ really results in a great final product.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RayPelesko In reply to Zarakoda [2014-05-11 05:11:29 +0000 UTC]

Thanks again! I agree completely about reference photos. I don't think I would be as motivated to work on a piece if I don't like the reference photo. That's actually happened a few times for me when working on commissioned pieces. Since I didn't pick the subject, I found it harder to spend as much time on it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Zarakoda In reply to RayPelesko [2014-05-11 17:03:35 +0000 UTC]

I've had that happen, too, or I've picked reference photos I found interesting when I started, but I became less interested as they went on.Β  Then the process felt a bit more laborious, I took some short-cuts, and the piece didn't turn out as well.
