Subaru's take into the luxury segment with grand tourer coupes.

First previewed as a concept car at the Tokyo Motor Show, the Alcyone SVX's overall design was made by Giorgetto Giugario from Italdesign. Compared to the preceding Alcyone XT, it featured a softer and curvaceous wedge shape profile. One of the more outstanding features of the exterior was the glasshouse, which had an aircraft inspired glass-to-glass canopy as described by Subaru.

Built the foundations of the Alcyone XT as well, the SVX was the second model from Subaru to feature a flat-six engine; with the 3.3 litre EG33 engine [231 hp • 309 nM] as well as being paired with the 4-speed 4EAT automatic transmission as the sole default setting.

Besides the standard all wheel drive configuration, there was also a front wheel drive option for 1994-1995 thru lower trims, but it was unpopular and got discontinued after two years. Later models of the S4 trim came with 247 hp for the engine and some JDM-spec models came with forged diamond-spoke BBS alloys instead of the standard 5-spokes.

Although pretty much a stunner, the Alcyone SVX was never quite the hopeful success economically wise, especially in the United States; with retail prices being $8,000-11,000 higher than any other model prior, and despite expectations of 10,000 per year, only a little over 14,000 overall were sold.

From its production run thru 1991 to December 1996, over 24,000 units were made worldwide, with a shy of 6,000 still in Japan, and almost 2,500 in Europe.
