I always thought it was named after the goddess of courage, Farore, as well as Eldin volcano (Din) and Lanayru desert (Nayru).

That is right, too. The dragons are named after the goddesses. The fire dragon is Eldin, and the thunder dragon is Lanayru. It's all connected.
