Interesting approach. Personally I find that toon shading is easier, quicker and have greater control if I use vectored object from the flats and shadow layer layer. Of course I use PaintShop Pro, not photoshop so I can knock out a suitable shape very quickly.
Of course vectors are sharp edged, but if I want the edge to blur all I have to do is convert the layer to rasta and apply the soften or smudge tool.
