Description I got asked to do a tutorial on how I color and this is what I made. It's not very good, since I suck at explaining. Not to mention that my English is pretty bad xD But I tried.
I hope it all make sense. I didn't really touch upon lightsource and what not, but that's not important /lies

I hope that the text is readable. And that I can help at least someone.

Also horrible layout XD

Enjoy!

haha xD It's such a nice way of making hair, I can't believe I used to shade a base color and make hair out of it. So I'm glad I learnt about my current way~
I've never used the wand tool, mostly because I draw a billion layers so it doesn't really work well to use it xD

Haha no worries~
Hmm.. I guess the easiest way would be to find a *coughcoughcough*torrent*coughcoughcough* with a working keygen :]

The not-so-very-good tutorial? Uh, yeah, maybe that's what you call it on Opposite Day. This is so super cool and I'm totes going to try this technique out! For so long I have always wondered how you coloured such awesome hairrrr ;A;

But what if every day is Opposite Day,hmm? ...wait..
Aww thank you very much! ;w; It would be fun to see how it turns out~ And maybe the student will surpass the master! Hahah master, yea right XD

Pffft this is TOTALLY good. Easy to follow and read and good techniques! I like the section on hair especially... you are definitely pro at hair.

Lol, if I ever made a tutorial it would be really confusing because I color and shade everything on the same layer. I use different layers for lineart but generally all of my coloring is on one layer... hahaha. I AM A BACKWARDS KIND OF GIRL. But it works for me so derp. < u >

I'm glad that it's easy to understand Often when you're trying to explain things it just gets messier and messier XD And not to mention that not having a full vocabulary kind of mess things up too derp derp. I love to paint hair ;w; As long as it's not curly xD

Hahah xD I actually got called weird once for using a bunch of layers for coloring. I dunno, I find it easier to shade under things and such and such. Sometimes it's a curse tho, since I use up too much memory and SAI gets all pissy about it.

I definitely know what you mean. I think your English is pretty darn good if that means anything to ya. I'm American, though, so ya'know... mine's not great either. HA! I actually really like curly hair... but I am horrible at drawing and coloring hair in general so it usually is really ugly... XD

Really? O_o I think it is common for people to use at least a few layers. I think most people that use SAI use different layers for shading and such. I used to use a butt ton of layers but I got really tired of it because I'd be like "WAIT WHICH LAYER DID I PAINT THAT ON EAJKTOEIJEA" so I just decided to screw it and do them all on one, haha. You have to be a lot more precise but at the same time it is easier for me because I don't have to struggle with finding which layer I painted that random highlight on or something. Lol.

That's good to hear at least! I mean I understand more than I can like write and talk, but that's how it is with me and my own language too and that's pretty sad.
I suck at drawing curly hair XD it starts out decent, then it just explodes into a mess.

XDD I used to have that problem before, then I started to name my layers like crazy and after I learnt about that Group button it was even easier. And sometimes I use folders, but that doesn't happen very often.

Noes! I can never show myself in public anymore! /shame
Haha yea, SAI got some secrets up its sleeves XD My first Sai drawing looked horrible! So I was really happy when I learned this technique. Such a difference.

YES U CAN! ;^;
I'm still trying to master it, but damn that program knows how to be annoying >_>
My first ones looked really messy and foggy, for short they sucked .-. My colors still like that but now I only do lineart on SAI rather the Photoshop XD (weird 'cuz I never meant to change photoshop on the first place XDDD)

Yea, I had huge problems with SAI too, and I was mostly angry cause I wanted to use OC4 which didn't work on my computer so I never really gave it a huge chance. But I liked how the lines ended up in SAI when I did lineart for my comic so I stuck to it either way XD
I think this is my first ever SAI drawing xD [link]

vane-elric In reply to ReachFarHigh [2011-02-05 21:21:33 +0000 UTC]

OC4...open canvas? I had huge issues with that program and now I can say that I hate it forever!XD
It didn't worked on mine also when I was using vista, but it does work on XP o/ (if you work with windows)

Which tool you use for lineart btw? o.O
Wowwwww I can't even compare XD you're obviously doing much better with SAI now XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ReachFarHigh In reply to vane-elric [2011-02-07 07:48:49 +0000 UTC]

Yea, I used it back on my XP computer and I really liked how my drawings turned out, then my tablet died and my computer got messed up so I got a computer and OC wouldn't work, except for a newer version which didn't work as well so I felt really angry about it all. Then I gave SAI another try and.. yea :U
As for lineart I use the Airbrush on a 90+ Density :}

Alsi-Margaret [2011-02-04 00:20:36 +0000 UTC]

wow, that WAS fast.
that technique of using a colored layer underneath the layer you're coloring is genius. i normally just do a little guesswork.
i am not sure if the programs that i use (corel, cs3, adobe 9) have a water tool equivalent, but i'm sure i'll figure something out. thinking back on it, i'm amost sure that cs3 has it... *runs off to look*
and thanks for doing this.

ReachFarHigh In reply to Alsi-Margaret [2011-02-04 12:25:17 +0000 UTC]

Yea, I had more free time than I thought I would XD Or I might have ignored more important things.. but let's not discuss that.
Yea, having a layer below the current layer helps a lot! I dunno how often I've gotten "lost" and forgotten to shade something XD
I don't think the water tool exist, but the Smudge tool works too, as long as it's a low density. Often it's the Eraser that do the "best" work, but the smudging makes it a little easier.
No problem! I hope it helped

This is cool dude.
Not too long ago, I was admiring your awsum colour skills so this tutorial really came in handy, even I don't do digital art. Now I just know how you color your amazing stuff.
Good work!

HAha thank you very much~
Sometimes a tutorial can give some tips even if it's not the right medium/program. (haha that sounds so ego, as if my tutorial is the best XD )
But I've looked at traditional art tutorials and gotten some inspiration for my digital style :'D
