I don't know what it is, but even though it will say explicitly in a book that someone is of a certain ethnicity people either can't or refuse to see it as such. In City of Fallen Angels it is mentioned (not suggested but actually said) that Maia is half black and half white.
People did the same thing with The Hunger Games. I didn't read the book, but the author stated in an interview that one of the characters is black, yet people were so shocked when the movie came out.
Maybe people are reading more than they used to, but they certainly are not comprehending what they're reading.

I only read CoFA once (definitely need to do it again soon!) so I can't remember that specific mention.
As long as Maia isn't cast as a white girl, then I'm pretty much happy lol

Same here. It kind of bothers me when casting directors ignore certain ethnicities of certain characters. It's like, what's wrong with having a strong Hispanic, Asian, or black girl character?

As far as Cassie has mentioned, they've been very positive about keeping the ethnicities just like the books, just as they are definitely keeping Alec and Magnus' relationship in. There hasn't been any controversies yet, but it's still early, so anything can happen.

Yeah, I heard the first script writer took out the Malec relationship which really irked me. One, because I think the world could use a strong gay couple in a movie, and two because that would have killed the series. Malec is one of the main reasons I'm a fan of the series! I'm glad Cassie fought to keep them in (that's what I've heard at least).

Maia is mixed, so she could be anything really. I think Cassie said she's half-black, half-Hispanic

It doesn't say her nationality anywhere in the books - just that her twin brother had "honey-colored skin and huge dark eyes" like their mother - so I interpreted that as probably mixed background, and so I chose Keke for now
