Description It had started out as such a great day.
Takato had woken up early with enough time to bring breakfast for Guilmon, he'd managed to peacefully daydream through his classes, he'd played the card game with Jenrya during lunch and won about half their matches, and after school he had gone to Guilmon's hut to play with him until it was time to head home. The very first warning sign they'd recieved had been Impmon, who burst out of the underbrush as they had been walking along the path, his eyes wide with fear. He was breathing heavily, and he looked like he'd been roughed up, or ran through some thorn bushes. Most worrying of all, instead of taunting or insulting them, he looked at the two of them with genuine terror.

"Don't go in the woods." He said urgently, not stopping to explain, not stopping to answer their questions, just running down the path and avoiding the bushes on either side, heading towards the city and away from the park. Both Guilmon and Takato had exchanged puzzled glances. Impmon had been fearless to the point of reckless in all the time they had known him. What could have possibly frightened him like that? Regardless, they decided to heed his warning and share it with the other Tamers, who would want to know about this oddity. When it came time for Guilmon to head back to his hut, Takato hesitated and then suggested that they find another place for him tonight, lest Guilmon discover whatever it was that had alarmed Impmon so much. His Digimon had nervously agreed and they made their way towards the park's exit together, trying to joke and break the tension that lingered in the atmosphere now, until their voices trailed off as they both noticed that the short journey to the exit was taking far too long. They seemed to be walking in the opposite direction of the exit, and yet no matter how many times they turned around, they always seemed to be going the wrong way. Guilmon tried to sniff the ground and follow their trail, but could only confirm they had been walking in circles. Glancing around, Takato noticed a figure standing farther off, deeper into the woods, and waved at them frantically.

"Hello? Hello! Are you lost too?" He couldn't make out any details about them, they were too far away and the woods were getting dark as the sun set. He could only make out the dim outline of the person, but he could see they were roughly the size of an adult, so that meant they were probably someone who could help them. And it seemed as though they were staring at the two of them. After a few moments, the figure shuffled behind a tree, and was out of sight. Guilmon whined fearfully, and Takato gulped down the sick feeling in his stomach.

"...Come on, boy, the way out has to be somewhere around here. We know this is the path out, if we just walk in a straight line, we'll hit either end of the park." Takato tried to sound like he knew what he was talking about, but they had been walking long enough to have crossed the park twice already, even if they had been turned around.
Neither one of them mentioned how the path seemed to be getting narrower with each step, and the trees loomed closer on both sides. Takato was taking deep breaths to keep himself calm, as Guilmon was already nervous and seeing Takato panic would just terrify him; Takato was the Tamer and he would figure out what was going on and take care of it, no sweat. He had already realized that it had to be some Digimon's attempt at luring them into a trap with some kind of unique Digital Field. It was probably just trying to wear them down before it ambushed them, but he had his cards ready to defend them when it did. It was then that Guilmon grasped his hand with both paws, Takato glanced behind him and tried to reassure him.

"It's okay, boy. I know this is all pretty creepy, but it's just some Digimon's trick. We'll either get out of it or find them and defeat them." Instead of reassuring him, however, Guilmon just shook his head frantically.

"Takato, that is what is scaring me! I don't smell a Digimon!"
Takato tried to stay calm, but it was harder to keep his breathing steady. Guilmon's nose was capable of detecting a Digimon from across the city, much less in the same area as themselves. If this wasn't a Digimon, then what was it...? He didn't have an answer for Guilmon's fearful confession, so he just gripped his partner's paws and lead the way down the narrower and narrower path. If worse came to worst, he could just have Guilmon Digivolve to Growlmon and start blasting a hole through the trees until they reached safety, but he didn't want to use their trump card unless he had no other choice.

When he'd seen the sign, a spark of hope had flared within him, though Guilmon had taken to nervously glancing behind them as they walked along, as though he feared that they were being followed. Takato tugged him towards the signpost, but his hope evaporated. The wooden signs were written in some kind of informal scrawl that said things like "This way" "No this way" "I think it might be this way" and so on, as though the objects were arguing with each other. Guilmon hadn't even bothered to turn around, he just let out a frightened whimper.

"Takatomon...! Look...!" Takato tore his eyes away from the sign to look around, and he saw them. Something was staring at them from farther away in the woods, watching them with glowing yellow eyes. And it wasn't alone, as he could see more eyes peering out from the gloom, all of them far away, but still too close for his liking. He pulled urgently at Guilmon, who was still watching behind them and holding his hand tightly.

"Guilmon, come on! We have to-" Guilmon slowly turned towards Takato, and stared at him with glowing yellow eyes, his grip holding him in place as the figures began to approach them both.

What'd I tell you? Folks want to know the next part of this Halloween special!

Your short story's not only a gripping read, but it also really enhances the artwork. It's very neat, actually: most of the time, it's the artwork that's "acting" out a story after the story's been written, but you've written the story to bolster the art and it really, really works. Suddenly, Guilmon looks all the more panicky. Those signs are all the creepier.

The lighting of the characters is *so* good. Their expressions are gold.

Super hot (or chilly?) stuff from you again. Thanks for posting this

Vibrant Echoes does VERY good work when it comes to shading, I am consistently impressed.

I was leery about posting a scary story, considering that's not what my viewers have seen from me so far, but your encouragement makes me feel much better, thank you. ^__^

I do actually have an idea for the next part, but it's still hazy.
