Saint-Michel de Granmont Priory, in Saint-Privat (France), May 2015The order of Grandmont, founded around 1076 and dissolved in 1772, was originally one of the most austere monastic orders of medieval times. Saint-Michel Priory, probably the best preserved monastery of the order, is located in a secluded part of Languedoc, in southern France. Its architecture is mostly Romanesque in essence, but there are hints of the arrival of the Gothic style, such as here in the vaulted ceiling of the tiny cloister.
The worn stones and rough lines of the architecture project a very attractive and moving quality, comforting witnesses of ages past.

Thank you : I was indeed attracted by the texture of the stones and the way the ceiling (deceptively !) looked as if it had been somewhat haphazardly built.

Impressive, but some of the stones in the vault look crudely placed. Looks dangerous.

It captures the age and meditative calm of a cloister very well, as well as the warmth of the stone in that part of France.
