Description This is one of two processes of the same photo. I am interested in seeing which one the majority of you prefer. Please judge the photo and not the process.

This image is shot in jpeg, tonemapped in Photomatix and processed in Adobe.

Photography like anything else has its jargon. The processes are all quite simple, otherwise I wouldn't be doing it. lol

At first I liked the one shot in RAW, but after looking at them both in full view, I have changed my mind. I like this one the best. The colors are a bit more subdued but there seems to be more differences in the tones of the colors if you know what I mean. I love the fence and the sky is more blue in this one. But that's just my opinion for what its worth.

Thanks Candace. I agree all around.

This wasn't really a test of RAW vs. HDR but I definitely preferred the results of the HDR in this particular case. To be fair to the RAW the colours were really off and I'm pretty sure that was because I had set the colour on my camera to Adobe GRB. I have since changed it back so I will soon know it that was the problem.

Ah actually the RAW shot looks punchier, better contrast. Is the exposure the same for each shot, only this looks like it needs a serious levels adjust
(May I have a play with this one?)

Rebacan In reply to Stumm47 [2009-10-20 06:45:29 +0000 UTC]

There is only one shot so everything is identical. I have my camera set to produce both jpeg and RAW. This is jpeg and it's also HDR. I like the colours better on this one but the RAW is much crisper.

You may play if you wish.

Cool. its a smallish pic tho, I think it would look great large. Can you change its size on here so I can right click>Download it? I'd like to do 2 versions, a colour and a toned B/W version and then email them to you when done.

Rebacan In reply to Stumm47 [2009-10-20 19:31:44 +0000 UTC]

I thought that was full size. What size do you want it?

Stumm47 In reply to Rebacan [2009-10-21 00:17:04 +0000 UTC]

Err well i ususally have my pic at 1024 or 1280 pixels on here, often saved from the memory card at full size from the camera

Rebacan In reply to Stumm47 [2009-10-21 01:39:23 +0000 UTC]

I don't think the size matters. I think I just have to authorize the download function. I will do that and you can do a legit download.

Stumm47 In reply to Rebacan [2009-10-21 20:49:49 +0000 UTC]

see that pic says 900x604 pixels, but when i click download it says its 4325x2901 pixels, but saves as a bitmap.
I'll get to work on it as soon as i can, probably friday now

Thanks. I think the RAW is winning by a whisker.

evaPM [2009-10-16 12:27:06 +0000 UTC]

I like this one better. It has more colours - not just gold but also green and red. This makes it have more depth and it makes details more visible thanks to greater contrast between them. This autumn is prettier even if not as rich.

Rebacan In reply to evaPM [2009-10-16 12:42:24 +0000 UTC]

Thanks I agree. This looks much more like the shot I envisioned when I was taking it.

evaPM In reply to Rebacan [2009-10-17 14:26:54 +0000 UTC]

If RAWs and JPEGs are so different then maybe it says something about the quality of the picture processing programming in your camera. Making reality more real-like

chalutplease [2009-10-15 16:22:49 +0000 UTC]

I definitely like the processing on this one better. There isn't the extremes between light and dark and it isn't overbright. The colors are much nicer too.

With the other shot I want to reach for my sunglasses but I still keep going back to it because it seems to have a sharper focus.

Very pretty shot either way.

Annaphotix [2009-10-15 10:13:10 +0000 UTC]

Well, I've had the two photos aligned and swapped from one to the other with Richard by my side, fascinated by the differences

I think the non-HDR has the edge this time though. It's always really interesting to see the differences isn't it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rebacan In reply to Annaphotix [2009-10-15 11:49:54 +0000 UTC]

Yes, and I was particularly surprised at the colour differences of all the shots this time. I stopped using my canon program for the RAW because I got 'no memory' messages and I'm taking them straight into Adobe so that is probably the difference.

I like the clarity of the RAW but the colouring of the HDR.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Annaphotix In reply to Rebacan [2009-10-15 11:57:28 +0000 UTC]

I'm really surprised your computer won't deal with the Canon program and yet will manage Adobe! Sounds as though you need an upgrade of RAM?

Yes, that's how we both felt about the two photos too

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rebacan In reply to Annaphotix [2009-10-15 12:12:25 +0000 UTC]

It's a new 4GB laptop and has lots of room. It was obviously a program problem and it seemed easier to just delete it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Annaphotix In reply to Rebacan [2009-10-15 13:22:11 +0000 UTC]

Oh dear; that shouldn't have happened. Perhaps if you re-load it it might work next time. I am trying out Lightroom 2.5 at the moment, and like it a lot. Everything defaults to going into the program of course, but then there are far more editing facilities there than in any Canon program

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rebacan In reply to Annaphotix [2009-10-15 13:39:07 +0000 UTC]

I'm thinking about it but then again how many programs does one need? I just get confused with all of the choices. I have heard really good things about lightroom though so that may be a consideration at some point.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Annaphotix In reply to Rebacan [2009-10-15 13:51:45 +0000 UTC]

I was introduced to LR at our Digital Imaging group a couple of weeks ago by someone who is expert at using it. Of course I very quickly forgot half of what he said, but I'm gradually working my way through all the tutorials etc. It's one of the programs that, once you have it, you don't want to be without it. Grrrr...

Have you ever thought of converting the jpegs to tiffs, then run them through photomatix?

Rebacan In reply to Pistolpete2007 [2009-10-15 11:44:25 +0000 UTC]

I did try that a couple of weeks ago and I got into a mess and nothing would open but I'll give it another go one of these days when I'm feeling brave. You can probably tell that I'm not exactly a techno genius.

Pistolpete2007 In reply to Rebacan [2009-10-15 13:51:00 +0000 UTC]

I suppose it depends on your computer system.Using big tiff files would slow you down or bring you to a stop

fuzzymax [2009-10-15 05:51:51 +0000 UTC]

I agree with taff. I like this one. The colors are much nicer, the tones softer. I can almost "feel" being there. It's more alive.

Rebacan In reply to fuzzymax [2009-10-15 12:00:33 +0000 UTC]

I haven't counted up the comments on each one yet but I think the other one has the edge. This one is also my favourite. I think some people will automatically reject anything that is HDR on principle.

Rebacan In reply to GaryTaffinder [2009-10-15 11:40:32 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Gary. I agree but I think the majority are going with the RAW image.

This is just one shot. I have my camera set to produce both from one shot. It takes up more space but I like to have the choice.

lori77 [2009-10-15 05:12:23 +0000 UTC]

I can't decide which one is better. I think this one, but the RAW is very good, too, because it's more vivid, but in a way, this looks more natural. Nice work!
