Description A very simple tutorial for making rough leather seams. Or any sort of seams, I suppose.

Great for tack, clothes, armor, satchels, whatever.

Probably best for intermediate Photoshop users with a tablet, though this could easily work with a mouse and any program with a similar leaf brush and Doge and Burn tools. I'd love to see what everyone makes!

No need to credit but please do not repost or alter.

Let me know if there are any mistakes or if anything is not clear. I tried to proof it, but mistakes do happen.

Happy painting!

Would you happen to have any pointers on illustrating leather itself?

I used a hard, round brush and multiple shades of brown to paint in the texture and shading...kind of blobby shapes blended together. Then I used a much smaller hard round brush to draw in some single-direction lines to show sort of faint cracks or creases, like you would get from wear. I also added some noise filter on overlay or multiply all over, on a low opacity, to give it the semi-porous look. And it depends on the type of leather (soft, hard, old, etc) as to how much shine you want to put on it.

You can also check out cgtextures.com - they have some great textures that you can reference for free.

Hope that helps!

Thank you! I'm so glad it's clear. I was worried, since it was rather random.

Aw. Well, like the comments say, this should work in pretty much any program that has a similar brush. You can use regular "paint" rather than the dodge/burn tools. Let me know if I can be of any more help! Although I don't really know anything about any other graphic programs than PS, Fireworks, and Paint.

Thank you! I've been using it for highlights (mainly for eyes) for some time now...but I was so surprised when it worked for this that I just had to share, lol.

You should see it now. I'm soooo proud of the braids! -fails at braids- Some it...looks a little different... Like like like...-breathes- I added a lil tattoo and an anklet and some ribbons and slightly changed the angle of the braids. I hope you like it!

All I have left are the vines on the bow, the grip on the bow, and the background.
