Description Full Title: "So Long...and Thanks for All the Fish"

I can't believe I haven't painted a dolphin before now. I love them. And Douglas Adams.

Why yes, I am slacking off on making contest prizes.

I used the same painting style as on "The Lesson Horse" but I tried to refine it a bit and I only used the smudge tool very sparingly. So this was hard-brush painted, smudged only a touch to even out the few bits that were giving me fits, and the only premade brushes used were on the water reflections (because the ones I attempted made the poor dolphin want to cry XD). And zero dodge and burn. I'm trying to move away from my crutches as much as possible. C&C please?

Aww, I hate it when that happens. There just aren't enough good reference photos of dolphins out there.

So glad you like it though! I didn't see yours in your gallery...would you let me know if you post it? I'd love to see it.

Well, I attempted it anyway.
Sounds like we like alot of the same animals. Of course, if it has four legs, fur, fins, scales, or feathers, chances are I'm gonna love it.

And thank you for the fave!

This is beautiful. Brilliant work with the coloration, especially given the reflected light from the bottom surface.

The only thing I can suggest for improvement relates to the water refraction brush: when you're moving it along a subject that goes "deeper" in to the picture, gradually reduce the size of the brush, and add just a bit more blue into it at the very farthest part. Right now, it's making the dolphin look a touch flat.

But gosh! The shape is right, the shading is right, and I love how you did the background. It's subtle in regards to the dolphin, and feels extremely spacious. Great technique!

RebeccaStapp In reply to CageyJay [2008-08-11 16:59:43 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much hun. I nearly drove myself crazy with the colors. XD But it was oh-so-fun.

And I think that's a really good idea, regarding the water reflections. I had never attempted them before so I sort of winged it, hence the resorting to premade brushes. But this was meant to be a learning experience, and I'll defintiely keep that in mind for the next one.

Thank you again m'dear. I really appreciate the well-thought comments.

And your hard work really paid off. Great job!

The suggestion is just that-- a suggestion. I'm just remembering what I saw the one time I dove with dolphins.

No problem, and best wishes!

And I always appreciate your suggestions. So keep 'em coming, m'dear!
