Bead sprite calibrations complete... Uploading to dAThis is a christmas present for a friend. He saw my other mass effect sprites made for Mass Effect Marathon and asked me to design Garrus.
My previous sprites only used Hama beads but I needed another grey and blue to may this work so I tried out some Hobbycraft Picture Beads for the extra colours. They're pretty cheap and decent beads but I'm still quite annoyed Hobbycraft stoped stocking hama in favour of their own. The extra colours are useful but having to order direct from another stockist and wait a week or two whenever I run low on Hama colours gets old fast.
For the first time in a while I've got the free time and beads to take some requests so feel free to ask for something you'd like to see.

Also as you're the only person on here I've seen mention hobbycraft's beads I hope you don't mind me asking but how different are their colours from hama beads? I desperately need different colours to hama but don't want to have to spend loads importing perler

I've not seen anyone else mention the Hobbycraft beads much either but I have found them useful. I used to buy my Hama beads from Hobbycraft until they stopped stocking them and brought out their own. The colour selection is rather limited but there is a pale grey available in sorted bags which I have found to be useful in a number of projects. Most of the colours are pretty much the same as their Hama counterparts and the only other significantly different one is a blue which is only available in the mixed bags/buckets and not separately packaged. Its lighter than the Hama blue and darker than the Hama pastel blue making it nice for transitions in something using a lot of blue.
One thing worth mentioning is that while the Hobbycraft beads work well among Hama beads they can occasionally warp instead of melting flat on the edges. I made a bead wreath at christmas using the Hobbycraft green when I ran low on the Hama one and while the colour difference isn't noticeable some of the beads on the edges of the sprite took on an oval shape that looked a little unusual. The black and white are pretty good and I've actually had more consistently good white from Hobbycraft. Some batches of Hama white have a lot of semi-transparent beads that don't look right when melted.
I'm tempted by Perler too but its not easy to get them shipped over without paying quite a bit. I hope this helps

Thanks that's great, I've seen Hobbycraft have a sale on them at the moment so I think I might have to take a trip
The grey is very good news, that's exactly what I need rather than spending about £4 a bag for the perler colours.
I'll have to watch out for the warping and see if it happens to mine too. Thanks for the super reply though

The warping seems rare and only when the hobbycraft beads are used in bulk. Hopefully you won't run into any problems with them. So far its only happened on the green.

The beads didnt turn up yet and were meant to be 1-2 day delivery when I ordered 2 weeks ago so I got in touch with the place I ordered from. Turns out they put the wrong post code on it and £100 of beads is lost in the mail... They wont re-send and I can't afford to buy them all again so I'll have to wait and hope they get to me eventually.
