Since childhood, Kurt Wagner had an extremely distinguished appearance, because of which he was considered a demon in his native lands. Growing up in a circus troupe, Kurt performed in public as an aerialist using his teleportation abilities. One day, Mystique came to him with the intention of convincing him to join the Brotherhood of Mutants, but was refused. Then she kidnaps Kurt and transports him to New York, but he manages to escape and is soon found by the X-Men.
