I think I understand how this works, well sort of.
I think each line has it's own name. Like for the first triangle, the diagonal lines are female and male respectively, while the straight line is intersex. Same goes for the ones that make complete diamonds. To line up in the center of any of the lines is the same as being in the center of the lines for version 1. I think it's just supposed to give more freedom for people to choose from...

I really had to stare at it to get it though.
