Description Hello again!

Here is a bunch of scribbles. Generally before I start working I do these random warm-up sketches (usually head-shots) until I am feeling comfortable with the flow of my lines. I can usually tell if it's going to be a good drawing day or a crappy day by the coolness of the warm-ups...haha. As a side thing I also enjoy inking and colouring these. The inking does actually serve a warm-up purpose of its own as it helps me get my hand under control and really steady, for ultra tight penciling.

This particular piece of paper appears exactly as you see it here. The only difference is that the Spider-man is now inked and coloured on the page.

I guess the main thing to point out here is the HELLBOY head. I have been doing a fair bit of this traditional colouring lately. It's alot of fun and the results are relatively quick and satisfying. I should also say that the scan dosn't really do the original justice, but they never really do! Colours are done using markers and coloured pencils.

Also, I wanted to point out that the Spidey sketches I am posting this week are the first I have ever really drawn since I was about 16 or 17.....So that's over 10 years ago! (except for a con sketch I did once...) I have no idea why I have never tried to draw him, cause I really do enjoy it. More Spidey is on the way!!

As a side note, I have really been getting into some of the 'old skool' McFarlane and Erik Larsen Spidey books. I need to get a copy of Amazing Spidermans 298, 299 and 300, to complete my collection, but they still go for so much!! I'm not sure that anyone has really done Spiderman justice since these guys. I loved Ramos' take on him, and Bachalo did a really cool short story (in Marvel Super Hero Island), but I guess I have high hopes for the upcomming Spiderman comics drawn by J Scott Campbell.....Finally some Spider-man comics we can look forward to!

Thanks for looking...More tomorrow!

J.

PS: Please feel free to comment on these postings... I may be typing too much info here, but I guess that's kinda, sorta part of the purpose of me doing this sketch week thing. I thought it might be a nice way of telling you guys a little more about myself since we have been 'hangin' out for a little over a year now! What do you guys think?

dude... do u like just draw that shit without reference material? or do u have comics and toys around you for a visual reference? I'm good at drawing abstract shit out of my head... and good at drawing things with reference photos but I can't get that kinda detail... without looking off the image itself.. I may tweak the image... different colors, etc... any advice?

Red-J In reply to blackmarkerstain [2007-07-03 01:01:29 +0000 UTC]

I do reference things from time to time. I should probably do it more often than not, but I find that if you observe something, and then do it from memory, you tend to develop your own style and voice like that, because you will remember details that are unique to yourself.

I very very rarely if ever use toys for reference, unless I am drawing that specific character, and I also avoid looking at others art while I am actually drawing. I definately check out others art for inspiration though.

I do love your style. I am currently building up some sketches of my between my revision for exams. But its very hard to try and get an everyday object and try to convert it more comic-style-ish. I am really big into hellboy comics at the moment so i have done some drawing of him. One of which is up on my profile. I am quite new at this comic drawing malarky but i want to learn quite quickly as i am currently inspired to write a graphic novel. I also have the story line pretty much sorted. are there any tips you can give to approaching my drawings?

well, I know this sounds cliche, but practice makes perfect...the more you draw, the better you will become, and the more you will get to know yourself and your style as an artist.

Those are ALL beautiful!!

I've already been all crazy about that Hellboy-headshot when I saw it before; REALLY AWESOME!!

I like the seriousness of your Reed Richards, goes along well with the character! Maybe I would have made his jaw less large...or aeast his mouth...I don't now...personal taste... But cool drawing nonetheless! I'm always having trouble drawing the FF...I've only managed like one good drawing of the Thing (...and then immeately made him my avatar... *lol*

The Hulk: it's crazy, I really NEVER was a Hulk-fan, but the way you draw him, I absolutely love!! And this one is way no exception...still feeling that ArtAdams-spirit in there! Would look really neat framed on my wall! *lol*

Spidey's just plain fun to draw! Looking forward to see some more!! I love it, when his eyes on the mask actually change with his expression, like for example Ringo did it...
(BTW: Thanks for the tip about Bachalo having done Spidey, definately ned to check THAT out; can't imagine him drawing Peter as his characters are always a bit "bulkier"...)

Yeah dude! If you get the chance to grab that Bachalo Spider-man comic, do so....It's totally worth it! Thanks for the kind comments, and sorry for taking so long to get back to ya! I have been particularly busy these past few weeks, and am only now getting the chance to breathe a little!

Well, he is a very tricky character to get 'right'. As with anything though, if you persist, you should be able to get it.

Hey thanks! I found your signature interesting..... What is the story there? I actually wrote somethign about this recently because I felt worried about DA's new policies myself. You can find what I wrote in this post: [link]

I'm still not 100% sure what it all means, but I seriously doubt DA could ever use our art for their own benefit, especially when it is already copyrighted by other companies (such as marvel, dc capcom etc....)

I'm interested in hearing your thoughts.

IΒ΄m not 100% sure about DA policies but that look very suspicious and I donΒ΄t like Β΄em. I removed my personal work from my DA gallery for that. Check my last deviation [link]

Ha!Love the way Hulk looks like..."Who the hell stole my hotdog when I went for a pee?!"
And...your version of Spidey is better than one that I've seen in...one of these new spider-man books...and when I say that...I'm serious

What to say about colors in Hellboy?I never could color anything with traditional ways...so anything with so much quality gives me shivers!

Rock on man!

When I post up others of these traditionally coloured pics later this week I may just drop a little "how it was done" section.

Hopefully that will do the trick
