Description This picture is for bfsurfer94. Long exposure (2088") of my tent and the night sky taken on my last backpacking trip. That works out to 34' 48" exposure. You wanted a long one.

Tech notes:
Started the shot with the stars in focus. Had a narrow aperture to keep the tent somewhat focused as well. Walked briskly to the tent, and lit it up with my LED headlamp for about 15". Then, proceeded to star gaze for a half hour.

Noise Ninja kicked the ass out of the noise, and I was not in the mood to wait for in camera noise reduction (it would have taken another 34' 48" to see if the pic even turned out.

I added a black mask on the silhouette of the hills. Note: in the first posting, the black mask picked up some of the sky -- that has been fixed.

Cheers!

I have a Nikon D80 and it doesn't have the option of a shutter speed that long. Mine only goes to 30 seconds! Any tips to get a shot like this?

What is the noise you all speak of? I am photo jargon illiterate.
Great pic by the way

If you look closely at that picture, you'll notice the stars have streaked. However, there are still some spots that look like stars that haven't streaked. Those spots are noise.

What happens is the digital camera's sensor gets hot, and starts to report certain pixels as all red (happens to every digital camera, and the only way to avoid it is to cool the sensor, which is expensive to do, not to mention difficult).

Thanks for the comment on the picture!

OOOH!!!
Thanks... Now I will know one of the parameters to think about if I decide to invest in the digital media as well as my pencils and colors...

You gotta love how the deviation appears in general circulation WAY before it ends up on your page!!!

What can I say about this photo? Wow! *shakes head* Wow! *stares for a while* Wow! I feel stupid. That's about all I can say! That's a LOT of work! And it certainly paid off. Mind if I ??

If you get time, can you tell me more about this Noise Ninja?

Go ahead and fav it. Thanks for the feedback! Also, ask all you want, but picturecode.com has noise ninja trials and info, and they may be more informative than I.

Thanks again for the positive feedback.

great shot

although some parts of the sky are a bit messed up, for the most part the sky is perfect with the streaks of stars.

but what I like the most is the lighting of the tent...

impressive work overall ^^

Yea, I just noticed, and will be replacing the bunked parts of the sky. I black masked the silhouette of the hill, and it picked up some sky too. Look for a fix in about 2 minutes.
