Nyingi didn't have a lot of friends growing up. Most of the lionesses kept their cubs away from her, seeing as she was the daughter of Scar. And since she was all but ignored by her parents, the only other lion she really had regular interactions with was her brother, Nukato.

But that didn't mean she had no friends at all.

No, Nyingi had friends in the cubs of the hyenas that inhabited the lands. In fact, many of the hyenas even encouraged their cubs to play with the princess, hoping in vain to get into Scar's good graces. But one hyena cub that was closest to Nyingi was, of course, the son of Shenzi.

His name was Jakobi, though he was better known by the nickname "Jake," and like Nyingi he was all but ignored by his mother due to being born male. So the two often played together, keeping each other company and complaining about their neglectful parents to each other. Their friendship was strong, but unfortunately it couldn't withstand Scar's betrayal.

In the end, after Scar lost to Simba and was assumed dead, the two former best friends went their seperate ways, though they never forgot the friendship they once shared.

NOTES: Jakobi, or "Jake," is a hyena mentioned in the Lion King short story Rhino Trouble, causing trouble in the Pride Lands during Simba's reign along with Fisi. I managed to get my hands on the book that Jake is in, and he and Fisi appear in an illestration on page 52. They look a lot like Banzai and Shenzi, but I guess whoever did the art for the book couldn't be bothered to make some unique hyena designs. I decided to make the Shenzi-looking one into Jake, and as an added bonus I made him her son from their first litter. I also doubled him as a Shenzi-looking hyena seen in the background of TLK when Sarabi is on her way up Pride Rock to confront Scar. Thank you to for bringing Jake and the book he's from to my attention.
