Poodle colors

love 'em and hate 'em all the same

Mostly used Color Genes in the Poodle for the fading gene, which is still VERY theoretical and my writing should not be used as fact!

Black Series

Black (BBEEVV, BbEeVV)

Color does not fade with age unlike blue or silver. Can show aged greying.

Blue (BBEEVv, BbEeVv)

Blue is a poodle term used for a black dog that fades slower than a silver and may take the dog's entire life to fully 'clear'. Poodles do not have the blue dilution gene (If they do it's extremely rare and ethical breeders will stay away from it as dilution is known for alopecia.)

Silver (BBEEvv, BbEevv)

Also known as grey, silvers gradually turns from black into a silvery-white coat at an earlier age, almost no black is present in the under coat.

Red Series

Red (BBeeVV, BbeeVV)

Red can present as a deep red or have orange tint to it. This color is mostly seen in toys and miniatures, recently (in the 1980s) it has been introduced into standard lines but that is a whole can of worms. Apricot (BBeeVv, BbeeVv)

Another Poodle term for a dog that is born red but fades into a lighter fawn color with age.

Cream (BBeevv, Bbeevv)

Creams are much lighter than apricots, undercoat is white.

White (BBeevv, Bbeevv)

White poodles are actually red poodles with very low intensity making them look solid white. Some white poodles are born with color but the color fades with age. All white poodles have dark pigmentation.

Brown Series

Brown (bbEEVV, bbEeVV)

Brown, aka liver, can range from a deep dark brown to a rich brown.

Cafe Au Lait (bbEEVv, bbEeVv)

Cafe Au Lait translates to "Coffee with milk". Cafes are born brown and fade with age but don't clear (Much like blues).

Silver Beige (bbEEvv, bbEevv)

Much like silver and cream, Silver beige puppies are born dark and clear within a few years.
