Actually, in the west it is most predominantly known as the "Star of David" an ancient Israelite symbol that is also a symbol for the modern day state of Israel itself... however, in the context of this painting it uses the meaning associated with that symbol in eastern traditions as well as in certain occult traditions, in which it is known as the "Hexagram". A hexagram has much in common, occult-wise with a pentagram in that it can be used for binding summoned spirits or for protecting the summoner from any sort of spiritual harm. So such symbols carry a certain protective element to them that makes them essential in the practice of magic (not stage magic, but actual occult magical theory and practice). There were some ancient Israelite mystics who believed that the Star of David's two triangles each stood for an aspect of God. The upright one stood for the masculine aspect of God and the down-cast triangle stood for the feminine aspect of God, which was sometimes considered a separate Goddess-figure known as the Shekinah whose origins can be traced to the consorts of various sky gods all across the ancient Middle East from Canaan to Mesopotamia and beyond. The Shekinah is known in Gnostic mysticism as Sophia, the Goddess of Wisdom who is looked at as the knowable side of God that is understandable in human terms, concepts, and thinking. There are two forms of the Hexagram - this configuration, the one that uses two triangles as you can see in this painting, and the unicursal variant which is drawn with a single unbroken line and which more resembles a pentagram with six points rather than a hexagram. That variant, the unicursal one, is more used in left-handed mystical practices which to some would be equivalent to a "dark" path. Whereas this variety, the two triangle variety, does not carry that meaning (although it can be used for those sorts of practices too, the unicursal one is said to be more powerful in terms of "dark" energy in comparison). And that is pretty much everything you ever wanted to know about the symbol but may have been afraid to ask, as the old saying goes. *Giggle* All in all, a positive symbol as presented in this image's context.

P.S. For an example of the unicursal variant of the Hexagram, have a look at my "Satan" painting in which I made use of it. Here is the link:
