Everything hurts. It hurts to breath. It hurts to move. It hurts. I don’t even want to see the gash that runs along the side of my boy. I know it probably is exposing bone.
"Skippy, you’re going to be ok," Reyna says, and I know that tone. She’s trying to keep panic out of her voice- something she doesn’t do very often. She’s knelt beside me, gently lifting my wing to check the wound.
For a moment, she doesn’t move. She just stares at my side, and my heart breaks at the look on her face. Though it hurts, I force my wing to cover it again. Gods. There’s no way this could be happening to me. It hurts. It hurts so much.
Reyna’s face is still horrified, and she mutters something in latin as she gently takes my head in her hands. I rest it on her lap and look up at her. This is it, isn’t it partner?
"Scipio…" Her hands are trembling. I feel awful, seeing her this way. I’m sorry, Reyna… "S-Scipio…" I see the rarest sight known to man. Her eyes are filled with tears, and she tries to hold them back.
I huff in pain as I shift my other wing and nuzzle her stomach. It hurts. It hurts so much, Reyna. I close my eyes and concentrate on breathing. It hurts. And though I want to stay for Reyna, I don’t want to feel this way anymore. I’m dying. But I’m dying slowly. We both know what needs to happen.
You can do it, Reyna. It’s ok.
"Scipio, I’m so sorry…" She whispers, taking her imperial knife in hand. I look up at her, trusting her. You can do it. I love you. It’s ok. She rests a hand on my forehead, the place she always said was my sweet spot. A tear streams down her cheek, and she lowers her knife suddenly, taking my head in her arms and holding me tightly to her chest. "Gods, I’m so sorry Scipio!" She sobs, clutching my mane. "Scipio…" She whispers through her tears and I brace myself as I feel her raise her knife again. It’s ok, Reyna. "Thank you for your services…" She whispers, holding me tightly. "I’m sorry…"
Me too. I love you.
Then I’m gone.
