Description ARMAGEDDON! I DREW FANART!

So, in light of all the various homonid Ammys wandering about dA, I figured I'd offer my own since I point blank like none of the others. XD
Fact of the matter is, they're all too cutesy and generic heroine looking for a game of such awesomeness as Okami. This, in part, is why you never see my draw fanart. Though I'd love to praise and make images commemorating and celebrating some joy of mine, it is often the case that I don't feel that I can portray whatever-it-is at the level that it deserves.
However, several factors have here conspired to produce this: one such being my frustration with the (in my opinion) fugliness of the existing homonid Ammys, another such being the awesomeness of Okami, and the third such being that I'm of the opinion that no one has any business nor right to in anyway portray the face of a god. Maybe that sounds stupidly theological for a game, but it stands, nonetheless. Consequentially, I knew I would require a mask for this and that made life twice as simple as it would have, otherwise, been.

Onward:
So, I used the paintbrush tool as opposed to the airbrush tool since, given that Okami is in the style of Japanese painings, it just made sense. It also cut down the time-spent factor which is all to the good since this is for fun - namely my own amusement - and absolutely no other reason, so it's not like I was going to spend the time to make it truly impressive. It's more fluke that it turned out well. XD

So, I decided to stick in one of every type of weapon and, initially, it was going to be the three most powerful. However, I couldn't remember what they looked like, I couldn't find a suitable reference, and it wasn't like I was going to go to the game and look at its concept art when I was busy on a different floor of the house doing something else whilst drawing.
So, then I was going to do my faves except I hate the glaives 'cause they suck so I only remember what one looks like, and the Divine Retribution (or whatever) reflector is so much more recognizable as an Ammy kind of thing and what havest thou so I went with that. HOWEVER, that is my fave roasry (rosaries are my fave weapon) insofar as appearance goes. X) The fishie!Rosary. Hee.

Initially Issun was in here too, but I erased him 'cause he sucks, mostly. And I didn't care to do him.

Decided that the tail was absolutely necessary given the whole celestial brush business and the fact that her hands are otherwise engaged. tried to get some of the red markings on the clothes as well as the mask, too.

And poo-poo to all the peeps who decided that homonid Ammy would have white hair because she totally wouldn't. Heck, when Mr. GhostManAtCave was like "Oh! Pretty Lady!" I pictured a black-haired Japanese chick. Once again, this is all about sense making.

Made an attempt to get the Reflector-slab-thing's design right but decided it was to painful a task to take on. So I didn't. Ha.
X)

So, yeah. I had my fun. X)

Finally a dark haired Amaterasu!! I'm kinda sick of just seeing her with white hair, ears, and a tail. Honestly if I saw a lady with a wolf tail and ears w/ white hair I would freak out and run, not revere the hell outta her. Lol, sorry ranting and bitching is my thing. Basically I think this rendition is accurate and very nice!!

This is by far my favorite humanoid Amaterasu yet. I absolutely hate all of the other ones I've seen, but this one actually looks accurate to me. Nice job!

Thanks. That's why I made it; I was rather put out by the other human Ammys out there, too.

Very cool.
I agree with you on the mask part of it all, although that's more influenced by the fact that I really like the Oina tribe, and how they all wore masks 24/7.

As for the having white hair bit, I don't really mind. I mean, I agree that most of the homonids need to look a bit more kick ass then the cutesy sort of heroines most were drawing, but the white hair isn't an issue to me. Probably because Oki and Mr.GuardsTheLeadersHutAndWearsBlueGuy could turn into a wolf, and their hair were the colors of their fur, if I remember right. (I dont' own the game, I beat it while I was renting it, so I can't really go back and check.)

The hair-fur thing sounds right, now that you mention it. So, white hair would make sense then. I stand corrected. Either which way, the cutesy-ness is nonsensical.
Thanks for the fave, by the way. X)

Very monomoke to me...

I like it. She actually looks like she could kill an 8=headed dragon on numerous occasions.

Great work. Makes me wish I knew more about the game, but still, I can appreciate the great artistic quality. Rock on.

WOOT. I like black-haired Ammy. And the mask is perfect. I picture her in a mask too - different sort of mask, but mask nonetheless. So, sweeeeeeeet.
The rosary came out awesome, too. That's the one that smacks people around with lightning, right?
Much luff.

Nice work, and well documented - you make a lot of valid points. I personally haven't played Okami a whole lot, but i think this rendering of Amaterasu seems to be quite close to what i imagine her to look like. As for the hair colour issue, i think it's important to remember that when a lot of people draw fan-art, the bits that they imagine are, a lot of the time, personal preference. For instance, i personally would have Amaterasu with long, flowing hair - the kind that doesn't really have an official 'stopping point', if you get me. But that's what i imagine in my mind, and likewise this rendition is what you imagine her to look like. I think it's a positive thing that all the details aren't solid, to be honest; imagination can be a key part of storytelling and character design. Likewise with all the Kingdom Hearts 2 fanart that's clogging up DA, a lot of people like to imagine relationships between characters. If the storylines for each character were completely mapped out, then it's possible that people wouldn't like the characters as much.

Okay, i'm babbling a bit. Anyway, nice work, and it's cool that you like the game so much.

Thank you.
Yes, I think I maybe I said the bit about the hair a bit more harshly than I meant to. In any case, I do see your point (and I can also see the flowing hair working for a human Amaterasu). But that's an interesting thought about the details; not a perspective I've looked from before. I suppose that having that option to imagine and build upon the character would, aside from bringing the audience into the creative process and involving them in what they love, would also make the character, perhaps, more easily relatable as opposed to a character only able to relate to a specific group or personality type.
Heh, I could argue about the matter of invented relationships between characters, but that's an angry rant for another day. Suffice it to say that it would seem to me that while, yes, certain such relationships are all well and good... but only if they make sense. But I suppose how much sense they make is also a debatable factor.
But I can see where the shippers are coming from, for the most part. There's some pretty incriminating dialogue in that game.

(Heh. Babbling's all to the good, so far as I'm concerned.)
