This sweet snowy owl may be the long-lost love of Talvir’s life, but she is not without a remarkable journey of emotional overcoming and adventure. She is a living example of how anxiety can be overcome through resilience and determination, and what greatness can result from that.

BACKGROUND…
Aspen was not originally from the Cornibus Twins. She lived an ordinary life in the woods on the mainland (and was born on Leap Day, no less!), until she was plucked from her home one day by crooks. They wanted to sell her in exchange for riches, until the most careless man of the group slipped up. Aspen freed herself and, fearing she would be recaptured, decided to fly across the ocean. After an hour of soaring above water, she discovered the Twins, blissfully unaware of what she was in for.

The first island she landed on seemed nice enough, until she was almost immediately spotted by crows and chased away by them en masse. She had never seen crows before, but the resulting trauma forced Aspen to escape to the other island and find someplace to hide. The owl inhabitants were unable to console her, as she was solitary and afraid of even them. She cooped herself up in a crevice, unsure what to do with herself, when a large owl finds the entrance, and approaching her calmly. Aspen can no longer bear it, and finally comes to her senses to let it all out to him. The owl, Talvir, reassures her safety and welcoming. From there, Aspen grew more trusting with the other owls, who were in awe at her. The first snowy owl on Cornibus!

Under Talvir’s guidance, Aspen learnt how to protect herself and triumph over her trauma, even if she was reluctant to take it in. All was well, until a crow spy was discovered. A skirmish ensued between the spy and Keon, escalating into a standoff against lieutenant crow Mekhl. Mekhl was killed, whilst Keon sacrificed himself. It was then Talvir revealed the true nature of the owls’ conflict with the crows to Aspen, from whom it was kept secret to protect her. He was going to inform her of it on his own, but Aspen was too distraught to listen. In trying to hide again, she got herself trapped when the crevice entrance caved in, and there was nobody to help her. A full day passed, when the war between the owls and crows struck. The sounds of fighting she could hear led to an epiphany; her friends were in trouble, and here she was, stuck. Couldn’t she help change that? Did she have to live her life underestimating herself and living in fear?

Aspen used her newfound initiative to free herself, finding it easier than expected. She was undeterred by the fire now engulfing Cornibus, with her attention on Talvir, who was facing off against Ryke. Aspen made a surprise entrance by assisting Talvir to defeat Ryke, as the latter owl moved away at the last second, symbolising Aspen’s true conquer of fear. Just before the smoke grew too much, Aspen showed her returned feelings for Talvir. That was the last time Talvir ever saw her, though he believes she is alive, well, and living a peaceful life by the values he had taught her.

PERSONALITY…
Aspen had certainly faced multiple sources of anxiety in her early adulthood, but has since grown to become strong and capable. She was initially apprehensive of being near other owls, as per her natural instincts. The more time she spent with the folk on Cornibus, however, the more she began to adapt. Her willingness to speak and open up about herself and her feelings also began to change.

Talvir has no doubt been the biggest influence on Aspen’s life. He became her closest confidant, offering her strength and support whenever she felt overwhelmed, and somebody Aspen knew she could trust to listen to her fears and insecurities. The eagle-owl’s compassion sewed the seeds of strength within her, so she could weather any storm — metaphorically, and genuinely — and it is something she has never forgotten.
