Description Shows: Rick and Morty
Epiaode: 5
Year: 2014

Writer(s): Ryan Ridley
Director(s): Bryan Newton

Let me be perfectly clear, if you still don't like Rick and Morty after seeing this episode than you should just stick to Futurama, because this isn't for those with weak constitutions. This episode deals with some heavy shit, and it can be extremely unpleasant to a lot of people; it might even make people relive memories they don't wanna remember. Remember when I said in my reveiw of "John Vitti Presents: Return to La Grunta" that the taboos of rape and sexual harassment are almost never treated seriously in adult animation? I brought up this episode stating that while it is more relatable than that kind, it is far more disturbing; and yes, it's extremely disturbing despite its fantasy elements because a lot of people can relate to what happens to Morty later down the line. Well, enough beating into a bush; let's get to this!

Rick and Morty's strong suit is taking a typical fantasy or sci-fi cliche and give it real life consequences. For example, those Mooks Rick and Morty kill have families of their own, the monsters have lives of their own, like Scary Terry bitch! Even the giant from a fairy tail world akin to Jack and the Beanstalk has a loving family. And Rick and Morty even go to giant court for basically commiting murder; even though they didn't really kill the giant in question. You see, this shows those typical fantasy fairy tale adventures in a far more realistic light.

Morty learns that not every adventure is easy or fun as he thought; especially when he nearly gets raped by a giant talking jellybean. Ah yes, the rape scene in question here was not intended to be played for laughs, Justin Roiland even stated as much in his Twitter feed. It was intended by the creators and staff to be taken dead serious. This easily could've been made funny, or what some sick people think is funny; I mean, it's a man-sized jellybean voiced by Tom Kenny for Christ's sake. And suprisingly enough Tom proved that he can actually do a serious role here; he actually makes a really frightening rapist. I see Mr. Jellybean as a parallel to the villain Hannibal Roy Bean from Xiaolin Showdown, only more realistically evil.

And even thought Rick was bitching constantly about Morty's adventure he actually has a good time, and when he sees Morty so shaken up and on the verge of tears, he doesn't ask what happened because he doesn't need to to know Morty was clearly traumatized in some way. As a Freeze Frame Bonus, watch when Mr. Jellybean exits the bathroom battered and bruised, see Rick glancing at him? Yeah, that's why I like Rick, he's a asshole, but he does love Morty and will beat the shit out of anyone who would dare hurt him; and a large part of why he works is because of him having seen just about everything there is in the Multiverse, nothing phases this guy so when something pisses him off, you better run. He even pays Mr. Jellybean back before they complete their adventure as a total success. The universe really is a crazy and chaotic place, but sometimes it can use some tidying up, and this adventure was wrapped up nice and neat Rick and Morty style.

As for the B-plot involving the Meeseeks themselves it is equally fucking intense. You see, Rick designed the Meeseeks so they could handle very specific simple tasks, they will go to any length to get their singular purpose fulfilled so they can die, since that what happens to Meeseeks' when they finish their task successfully. Existence is pain to these guys, normally it only takes one 5 seconds to, say, open a jar of mayonnaise but when you have to help Jerry Smith with his golf swing and it takes TWO WHOLE DAYS AND AT LEAST A HUNDRED MEESEEKS? Needless to say they go insane from the pain of living and figure through insane troll logic that the only way to get ALL STROKES off Jerry's game is to kill him. Honestly I don't blame them, if I had to deal with a guy like Jerry I'd go nuts too. And the funny thing is, Summer and Beth were able to use their Meeseeks' to do honestly pretty difficult stuff, because it involved communication and manipulation, what they're best at, not physical labor. It ultimately ends with a hostage situation that is also played very seriously, even thought the Meeseeks all have the exact same voice as a screaming Lemongrab.

This episode, if you haven't been the victim of such events is what I consider to be the the show at its very best. Then again all of the episodes in the first season are amazing, and have each taken different leaps and bounds to prove you can do adult animation and make it disturbing, funny and heartwarming all at the same time. It's this episode in particular that made me declare Rick and Morty the greatest adult cartoon of all time (unless something really bad happens in season 2).

Rick and Morty is owned by Willaims Street and Turner Broadcasting.

If the rape scene was done in Family Guy, it would've most likely been played for comedy, especially if Meg is involved. Tell me I'm wrong.

"Yeah, that's why I like Rick, he's a sociopathic drunken mad scientist, but he does love Morty and will beat the shit out of anyone who would dare hurt him."

Definition of a sociopath: a person with a psychopathic personality, which manifests as amoral and antisocial behavior, lack of ability to love or establish meaningful personal relationships, extreme egocentricity, failure to learn from experience, etc.

Rick has the ability to love (as you stated "he does love Morty and will beat the shit out of anyone who would dare hurt him."), so "sociopathic" doesn't seem to fit him. Honestly, what I really don't like is that Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon described their titular jerkass character "sociopathic" without knowing the actual definition of sociopathy.

Fixed. Rick's assholishness isn't because of sociopathy but because he's on such a higher spectrum than everyone else almost nothing phases him.

Tom Kenny did voice work here? I had no idea. Speaking of voice actors, Justin Roiland voices Morty and I think Rick. He also voiced Oscar on Fish Hooks. No wonder Morty sounded a bit like him.

Yeah, I also did a 1001 Animations on this episode. This episode proved to me that Justin Roiland is a very respectable person. He had the talent and balls to make this episode, and he had the respect to make it a very serious episode. This is what an adult show should do. Go into balls-y territory, not to (purposefully) offend people, but to tell a story where the emotions would be stronger than they ever could be.

And also, as MrEnter said in his Animated Atrocity on "Tommy's Big Job", "you don't have to be afraid of tackling any issue, and you can tell stories with layers of allegory."

Don't be afraid to cross boundaries but don't TRY to offend people. You can be offensive, but dotn make it your primary goal. That's how The Boondocks worked.

Offensive material can be funny, but you really need to know what you're talking about, lest you end up looking even more stupid and arrogant than the people you're trying to offend. Trey Parker and Matt Stone understand this; Seth MacFarlane does not.
