You may know by now that Garnet is in fact a fusion of Ruby and Sapphire, and that it is made of love, but did you ever wonder how those two Gems met in the first place? Well, like Garnet promised, she tells Steven this very story on his birthday… at midnight… Ok.

As it turns out, Gems have been fighting their war on Earth for over 6000 years, and it's here we get our first glimpse of Blue Diamond, one of the Gem hierarchy and the true leaders of Homeworld. The style of Garnet's flashback is very well done, concealing the faces of the Homeworld Gems, but leaving enough of them for us to make them out, like the fact that Blue Diamond herself has a Pearl with rocker hair. Sapphire herself is very special indeed, very rare even by Homeworld standards for her ability to see into the future, and it isn't too bright as among other things she foresees her own death!

During the attack by Rose Quartz and Pearl, things go according to her vision we learn that fusion on Homeworld is mainly seen as weaponization of weaker smaller Gems into a massive powerful one. Ruby's, in essence, are like the Goombas of the Gem Homeworld, very common and expendable, but fused as one, they become a giant. Before she's struck down the last, Ruby saves Sapphire from Pearl's blade. And in that moment, they become one.

Back on Homeworld, it was unheard of for Gems of different species to fuse, as it's primarily multiple of the same type fused to make one giant. And this little surprise goes against Sapphire's vision, upsetting Blue Diamond and making her look like a liar! Leaving her with only one course of action: execution. This revelation of Sapphire knowing full well of her fate gives Ruby one choice: to save her life!

The romance between Ruby and Sapphire is actually handled really well here; yeah, it uses some of the clichés you find in stories like this, but for the most part, it feels natural. "Something Entirely New" is one of the most beautiful songs of the entire show as we see a Ruby and Sapphire's relationship come into full "form" as it were. It never fails to make me tear up and almost cry. Now onto when Ruby and Sapphire truly become Garnet: yes, she does look like cotton candy and that's absolutely hilarious, but more than that, it almost feels like they're truly reborn when they first become one; like a baby first stepping out into the world and discovering things from a new perspective.

The conversation she has with Rose Quartz can be related to just about anything or anyone discovering their true nature, calling, passion or, yes, even sexuality for the first time and coming to grips with it. Everything you thought you were you never knew until now. But in the end, the answer to all this is quite simple: love.
