Yeah I actually managed to find a pretty good print of this cartoon thanks to my Gulliver's Travels Blu-Ray. Thunderbean does them some good work! While the Color Classics aren't exactly the first thing that come to mind when you think of Max Fleischer they did have a quaint charm to them; not exactly on the level of Silly Symphonies but their are some standouts to the name. If Poor Cinderella can make it as a runner-up on the 50 Greatest Cartoons anything's possible!

I love the Dutch scenery of this short, through the use of the Multiplane camera and and a turntable they were able to make the lushness of Holland really pop in this cartoon! Those scenes with the windmill and the opening could easily be mistaken for live action! Compared to Babes in the Woods it isn't exactly a retelling of Hansel and Gretel but it's got a similar deal to it regardless. I think that duck that accompanies them is really cute as well and love how it's the one to save them from getting their TONGUES burned out by the dirty, bandy-legged miser. Yeah as soft as Fleischer went they could still slip in the bizarre or scary every now and then, and this miser villain worked well for that.

Speaking of I just love the way he gets beaten here. Instead of getting the snot beat out of him by the entire town they instead quite literally "clean up his act". They give the miser and his home the works! I'd burn some tongues for a home that good looking! I think this short went into Max's own philosophy that nobody in this world is completely evil and everyone deserves a second chance. A very dated and flawed idealism but something that can be worked in with some tweaking. Beyond that the music isn't half-bad either, I have the title theme in my head!

Check out A Tale of Two Kitties, this is where Tweety Bird made its first appearance and have a voice actor along side Mel Blanc.

Will you relax already? I do plenty of positive reveiws. Hell out of nearly 1500 submissions I've only done 279 Atorcities.
