Description Show: The Venture Bros.
Episode: S2 E11
Year: 2006

Writer(s): Ben Edlund

One thing most people don't really realize is that The Venture Brothers is in essence a deconstruction of Hanna-Barbera's action and mystery cartoons from the 60s and 70s, and not merely a Johnny Quest parody in and of itself, after all in the show proper we see that Race Bannon himself has been killed, brief mentions of Dr. Benton Quest and Dr. Zin have been made and as for Johnny Quest himself? Well due to legal reasons he's now called "Action Johnny", and is a traumatized drug addict of the worst kind. Season 2 is the point wher the show really shed its Hardy Boys/Johnny Quest adult parody roots to become its own entity and become more character driven, more emotional; but at the same time it just gets CRAZIER with each and every season!

This episode in particular is one of my all-time favorites, it's top 10 material easy! Remember when I just said Venture Bros. deconstructs Hanna-Barbera stuff? Well before its release the first live action Scooby-Doo movie was going to be a more adult parody of the series itself, Daphne and Velma we're going to be in a secret lesbian relationship, Shaggy was a legit stoner, that sort of thing. I believe I already talked about this before... Anyways, what if the Scooby-Doo gang we all know and love was ACTUALLY comprised of the most dangerous and mentally scarred invidivuals ever!?

I'm serious about this. Their version of Fred is basically notorious serial killer Ted Bundy, who those of you not versed in history may remember from South Park's Hell on Earth 2006, which came out shortly after this episode, here he's known as Ted or Teddy. Daphne or "Patty" is kidnap victim Patty Hearst who was abducted and brainwashed by the terrorist cell known as the Symbionese Liberation Army in 1974. Velma or "Val" is the notorious feminist lesbian radical Valerie Solanis who tried to murder Andy Warhol, yeah the guy who made art out of soup cans. And what of Shaggy and Scooby you may ask? Well while they aren't pictured here "Sonny and Groovy" are the crazed hippie serial killer David Berkowitz and his supposedly demonically possessed dog Harvey, with whom he gets orders from. THIS, THIS RIGHT HERE! This is how you properly deconstruct and corrupt child friendly characters AND be clever about it!

You ever think that Rusty would be better off as a supervillain? Considering he made a pleasure chamber powered by the heart of an orphan and just brought back someone his bodyguard Brock Samson killed to be repurposed into a suicide bomber that's a given. Thaddeus "Rusty" Venture is the epitome or morally ambiguous doctorate, and he's a good guy! In the first few seasons he comes off as incredibly careless and self-preserving not caring who gets killed in the way of saving his own ass and besides that he's just a smug ungrateful son of a bitch! You almost WANT the Monarch to kill him! However, despite his abusive and downright monstrous actions he is a good man at heart with actual legitimate reasons for his insanity we learn overtime as the series progresses; it may not justify making "Venturestein" but it does explain a lot. Especially considering Hank and Dean.

Speaking of brutality we get a better look at Brock himself in this episode as well, given how many people he kills on a daily basis to protect this asshole and his stupid kids you'd think he'd feel bad about all the death and destruction, even though they're basically henchmen, albeit affable ones. Well, when you've been trained by the government to be a lethal high grade killing machine who basically shits on guns is there really any room for empathy? Yes there is; this is where we see Brock really open his mind and emotions for the first time and realize he ain't a sociopathic hero, but that under all that muscle he does have empathy and cares for Doc and the boys. Also we get to see Hunter Gathers as a naked lady! That kinda happens when you're invited to a party by a necromancer.

All the funny Hanna-Barbera sounds can't shake the horror the boys experience at the end of this episode, and yes it is one of the most intense moments in the series up to now. For the record, the boys are clones and they end up stumbling into their fathers clone farm with their backups, causing them to go into shell shock. By this point they've "died" about 15 times or so; I'll cover that episode later on though. How they manage to snap back is actually pretty damn funny to be honest, this show is GREAT at comedic sociopathy.

We have a Frankenstein snap the neck of a demonic Scooby-Doo while screaming about prostitutes in a room full of naked teenage clones with Ted Bundy getting head butted to death by Patrick Warburton. Now THAT'S a sentence you don't hear everyday! This really is an episode you have to see to believe for yourself, it's so off the wall and bizarre even for this show that I didn't think I could properly process a review! This episode is one of the most unique in the series by far, and not just for its content, but the fact that it's the ONLY episode not to be written by series creators Doc Hammer or Jackson Publick, like, that's never happened before or since this episode. It feels weird.... So to sum things up: Venturestein, Groovy Treats, PROSTITUTES! DON'T HUNT! BROCK GOOD!

Did you ever do a review of the one venture episode where doc has to go to a boy adventurer therapy session, I think that episodes really breaks down the boy adventurer trope pretty well

Absolutely love this episode.
My other favorite Season Two episodes are Assassinanny 911 and Victor, Echo, November.

I like Venture Libre better. But they're both great.

This is also (irc) the only episode not written by Doc or Jackson.

It's not my favorite episode, perhaps because I like SD too much to care for their deconstruction. But the series has been some of the craziest, smartest animation on TV

Ehh. I am on the fence because I really loved Scooby Doo as a kid. Also, the whole Venturestien was a bit much at the beginning. I'm glad it ended up being kind of funny at the end, but seeing the world through his eyes and how he was basically the families "pet" or slave was really sad...

I'm not saying it isn't a good episode, I just didn't like it.

Is that the newest season? Honestly, it's been about three years since the last new season. I love how Dean has become an Emo. Totally saw that coming since he doesn't know the difference between Goth and Emo. XD

No shit!? When did the new season start?

Also, I bet it's because Doctor Venture ran out of money and had to Venture Complex. XD

Okay good to know. I haven't watched Adult Swim for a while. Kind of boycotting them because of what happened to ATHF...

I normally catch episodes on the On Demand feature Time Warner Cable has.
