Description Developer(s): Rare / Year: 1995 / Platform(s): SNES, GBA, 3DS/Wii/Wii U (Virtual Console) / Genre: Platformer

Best Goal: Defeat Kaptain K. Rool / 100% Goal: Colelct all 40 DK Coins, Collect all 75 Kremkoins, beat all levels in the lost world

When a sequel can be just as beloved, and even superior to the original you’ve managed something special. Donkey Kong has made some truly amazing games in its 38 years, and the original trilogy by Rare have stood the test of time as the top games on the SNES; one of the greatest consoles of all time. Daddy Kong was already one of the best things about the original DKC as an improvement over Tails in the Sonic series where he didn’t simply act as a second htipoint, but a way for you not to feel lonely on your journey. So giving him both a girlfriend in Dixie and his own game was the most logical choice as an upgrade to Donkey Kong Jr.

Given the Kremlings’ origins as originally being for a point-and-click pirate adventure game that never was, this new pirate motif gives everything more visual flair and charm. And if you know Pirates it can also give you a chance to tangle with dusty old bones and even the undead! The bosses in DKC2 are far more varied and challenging than those of the original as well, with Kaptain K. Rool in both his first and last boss fights giving you a real test of your reflexes and barrel throwing skill!

One aspect of the game I really think justifies its superiority is its emphasis on teamwork via the throwing mechanic being enhanced. Whereas you definitely couldn’t have Diddy throw the Big Dong himself and age it make sense, allowing Dixie and Diddy to throw one another in order to reach obsticals, bonuses or coins. You can see how in DKC3: Dixie’s Double Trouble now trying to throw a big fat baby doesn’t really work out... yeah I don’t like DKC3... it’s not bad, but it’s development from a different internal team at Rare was super apparent.

It also does a better emphasis at incorporating the animal buddies giving you options like Squibber the Soider and Squawks the Parrot. Animal Antics in particular is a delight to go through utilizing all of them in a way never before repeated. I also admire the level design of this game in particular, the Stcikeebrush levels look so realistic it’s almost like I can touch them! It shows that the darker atmosphere of Crocodile Isle doesn’t have to be completely unpleasant and gives you some wonderful breathing room akin to the water levels; while also being nerve wrecking at the same time!

And yes, the infamous golden ending does leave a lot into question, but it also does a great job at putting K. Rool over the edge for the future... after all the destruction of one’s home motivates one to go further into madness... you do what you have to in order to save your loved ones... but it can lead to a hefty collateral...

The vulture looks like it was from a Moorhuhn game.

Krow is easy to beat. But it gets harder when you see him as creepy Krow. Creepy Krow is the ghost of him.

My grandma still has her SNES and a small cache of games for it.  DKC2 is one of them, and she has the whole DKC trilogy.  In 2017, after 20 years of coming up short, I finally managed to beat all three games within the timeframe of 12 hours.  The boss who scared me the most in DKC2 was—and still is to this very day—Kleever the Evil Living Sword of Death!  His jumpscare in the middle of the battle scared me THAT MUCH back in 1995!

I grew up with the GBA remake of the game. Let me tell you: It's nostalgic with plenty of content~! Time Trials, a new collectible, and the Funky Mini-games which feature DK64 cameos including Tiny Kong~

And let's not forget the fantastic soundtrack here. Different level clear music, whether it's Diddy dropping a beat with a boom box, or Dixie rocking the guitar while flinging that ponytail all over. From the catchy Jib Jig, to the serious Lockjaw's Saga, to the especially thrilling Castle Crush.
