Description Show: SpongeBob Squarepants
Episode: 104b
Year: 2008

Writer(s): Steven Banks, Luke Brookshire, Nate Cash

Wow, it's amazing how an episode with a very creative idea can become one of the cruelest in the entire series. The Last Man on Earth plot is definitely an interesting one, usually though its reserved for more mature series like The Twilight Zone, because trying to play a scenario like that for comedy is extremely difficult without making fun of insanity. Although, a recent Fox series with this as its premise was actually pretty good. That show knew how to make someone being the last human on Earth pretty funny; it also helps that our main character eventually found another human companion (spoilers btw).

This episode is essentially a rip-off of The Twilight Zone episode "Where Is Everybody?", although a hell of a lot more cruel. In both episodes, it's revealed that the main characters in question were never really alone, albeit for entirely different reasons. I'm not sure, but I think the episode wanted us to find SpongeBob slowly going insane and putting personality into inanimate objects funny. But it isn't at all. Also, I don't think SpongeBob can really shape-shift in any other episode, but whatever. You know how in "Plankton's Regular" how he was dealt such a low blow? This episode goes beyond even that.

Much like in "One Coarse Meal", certain actions here might be understandable if the show had any form of continuity. Granted, in the case of "One Coarse Meal” nothing would justify what was done. Additionally, SpongeBob is very close to his original personality in this episode when he isn't going mad; a common problem with SpongeBob torture porns like "Stuck in the Wringer". This is probably the worst example of an episode where the ending completely kills it, even more so than any other in the series, "One Coarse Meal" included.

If SpongeBob really had been abandoned for an entire day, it might at least be somewhat comedic in such a slightly comically short time-span, but the Bikini Bottomites abandoned him for weeks. And it is quite possible to go completely insane in that time span. Also, Patrick was among them, and his justification for it becomes the default justification for the episode: "they need a break from SpongeBob's laughter." A holiday dedicated to getting the fuck away from somebody isn't funny; it's sick and cruel. I don't even want to describe how it's celebrated, but let's just say that everybody here was as bad as Squidward was in "WhoBob WhatPants?", if not far worse.

The strangest part is when the boat becomes evil and starts chasing Spongebob. After Spongebob runs into the bus that has all the others on it the boat is never seen again. What happened to it? Does it still want Spongebob dead? I don't get it.

1-Wouldn't it have been easier,(and less expensive) if they told what they were doing so he could keep his destruction to a minimum, or sending him off.
2-I honestly doubt everyone in the town would just bail on him for a day with out any advance.
3-what was stopping plankton from just staying behind, breaking into to krusty krabs and taking the formula.

You know, the old reviews that say SpongeBob's a kids not even be aware of the newer episodes, so if I were you, here's what I would do, I would praise SpongeBob as a horror show and praise SpongeBob as a sponge turning into a deranged psychopathic maniac, now that's the way I praised SpongeBob.

Ouch, that's dark, but Mr Krabs did once try to murder squidward just to raise the value of his paintings.

Some modern spngebob episodes are bad I know, but I think it's mostly how writers abused characters. Seriously, I wish I could enter on the TV and give Spongebob a hug.

At the very least, the series redeemed itself a bit later on.

The idea that apparently EVERYONE needs a break from SpongeBob is an interesting, if mean-spirited one. This could have been a good episode, if they had had the townspeople pay in the end. Like if SpongeBob went so crazy he destroyed the town trying to stop the "boat uprising". I do agree that The Last Man on Earth is a good idea, but this episode just handled it all wrong.

Thoughts on all SpongeBob seasons:
Season 1 was awesome
Season 2 was nice
Season 3 was good
Season 4 was funny
Season 5 was mixed but at worst at least it tried to be funny
Season 6 was bad but at least it tried to be funny
Season 7 was godawful
Season 8 wasn't any better
Season 9 started out godawful but redeemed itself

But in all seriousness, this episode had the potential to be good, but the ending ruined it.

But what if in theory One Coarse Meal was in SB's timeline after The Algae's Always Greener? Like, somewhere in between someone saw a whale eating Plankton's hillbilly ancestors (but it's only a few of them, what happened with the rest of the guys that were in Plankton's Army but not in the "whale eating ancestors" flashback?) and then he was like "Oh no! They're going to eat me too!" and started to fear of whales ever since (or should I say he became a cetaphobe). And he has never seen a whale ever again, or as far as we know.

The ending itself tore the fabric of this episode to shreds. Celebrating the abandonment of a person is just terrible and unmoral. AND, they announced it to SpongeBob with pride. That just tells you that there might be hatred or a discouragement amongst them towards SpongeBob. They have lived with him for many years, and doing this must have been a slap in the face to SpongeBob. Did all of those laughs they everyone had with him mean nothing? Did they take advantage of any ignorance that SpongeBob had towards their view on his personality and laughing?

God, the people of Bikini Bottom have turned from peaceful citizens to absolute antagonizing jerks.

It's like imagining Spongebob "cast" are actually actors that were given different scripts for a day. Oh and in that case of imagination, it's like when the original show creator left, the new writers came and "took away the cast's old scripts and gave them their own".

But then again, it's a cartoon and everyone there got their own characters. In the end of the episode, everyone loses it. I'd rather imagine this ending as Squidward (and probably Mrs. Puff too) making everyone pretend everyone hates Spongebob for a day and leave the town for that kind of thing, even Patrick himself. If that was the case, would the episode make you feel better it all was an exaggeration?

Conclusion: IMAAAAGINAAAATIOOOON makes an episode feel alright for you even if it's panned by the rest.
