Show: Family Guy
Episode: S14 E6
Year: 2015
Writer(s): Tom Devanney
Director(s): John Holmquist
It seems like whenever I run into an episode that dealt with a family member being a bully, they end up being among the worst of the series. My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic had "One Bad Apple", South Park had "Butterballs", and then there's Family Guy with "Peter's Sister"! Let's shoo the elephant out of the room first: it's been established Peter never had a sister prior to this episode and was the bastard child of a drunken Irishman. Now, when SpongeBob SquarePants did something similar to this in "Big Sister Sam", I could accept Patrick's sister despite prior episode’s evidence to the contrary for these reasons: SpongeBob doesn't have any continuity, Patrick is a moron, we've only ever seen his family once who're also stupid, and that comment about not having a sister in "Something Smells" was meant to be a joke.* Family Guy has an exceptionally strong continuity for a comedy show, so something like Peter having a sister out of nowhere is just an asspull.
With someone like Karen "Heavy Flo" Griffin, she's your stereotypical butch lesbian aunt character who also acted as a bully towards the main character in their childhood. She acts pretty much like Peter does to his own children to the man himself only she's more passive aggressive and physically violent. Rugrats actually kind of did this concept better with the episode "Aunt Miriam", and in that episode, it was shown that the titular aunt regretted being such a bitch to Lou in their childhood and wanted to patch things up. Here, Karen is just the nastiest kind of physical bully, especially when she pulls real wrestling moves on Peter and makes him piss his pants. This is supposed to be some kind of catharsis or schadenfreude for all the horrible shit Peter has done in the show, I guess, but that doesn't work because of what happens with Meg.
For some reason, Meg actually feels sorry for Peter getting bullied by Karen, even though he's done FAR FAR WORSE to Meg and other people like murder and rape! Even with the fact that events don't carry over from episode to episode here, you can't ignore Peter is an abusive prick now and has been for the majority of Family Guy's post-revival runtime. We get a whole FUCKING MONTAGE of many of the times Peter has bullied (i.e. assaulted) Meg, and it just proves to me the poor dumb creature needs therapy or a foster home. Trying to go the whole cycle of abuse route doesn't make any of this any better or justify Peter's behavior throughout the years, and instead of any sympathy, I just hate everyone in this episode. Also, this is completely unrelated, but that hypnotism scene freaked me out a lot more than it should've. What even was that? Was that a bible reference or something? Is Peter the devil? I don't get the joke.
The wrestling match goes about as well as you expect with Peter getting his ass kicked, and I don't give a fuck. I'm out of fucks to give for this man and everything his family has done. The good this show can still churn out doesn't make up for how horrendously bad the show can really get and just proves to me it's time for it to die. Also, Teen LaQUEEFa? I didn't like the queef jokes in South Park, and I don't like them here. There's just something about them that makes me uncomfortable... Why did Meg even bother saving Peter? Doesn't she realize Peter and her family will NEVER change and never love her? Of course, what do I expect from another sufferer of Stockholm syndrome, and she really does suffer from Stockholm syndrome. Also, they're happy that Karen gets put into a near-death coma; if you know my history, you'll know why I take offense to this. As much as I hate Peter, I wouldn't wish death on the guy or any of the Griffins because I'm better than that, and Karen was just another forgotten cutaway gag that we'll never see again because she died! Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to Chico's Monkey Farm to choke the episode outta my brain.
*Though surprisingly, as of Season 10, Sam has yet to appear again. Or maybe she won't appear again at all probably because Stephen Hillenburg hates that character.

I loved this episode and I really liked KAREN cause she definitely seemed the more cooler & smarter one than that stupid Peter and especially more NICER to Meg! I just can't understand why Meg felt sorry for that stupid fatass faggot stepfather of hers and helped him instead of just ENJOYING all the bullying Karen was doing to him After all the SHIT he's done to her Meg really should've been enjoying it

This is why i wish Mr. Weed, Francis, Loretta, Diane, and a couple other characters were still alive. They made the show great. But now they are dead and the show turned bad. I really wish they would bring them back.

From what I heard, they start treating Meg MUCH better after this episode (Crimes and Meg's Demeanor and Christmas is Coming are great examples, you won't believe it until you see them).

I've seen the former episode, but not the latter. Since writing that comment you just responded to, I've looked through a lot of the episodes that came after this one, and...it's true. They really have been treating her better for the most part.
Yeah, she still has it rough at school, but her family has been treating her much better and have even showed on a number of occasions that they care for her. Peter still kind of treats her like crap, but it's no longer any worse than how he treats anyone else, so that's at least something.
Therefore, I am no longer apologetic in the fact that I like this episode. As a matter of fact, I don't really understand why people are shitting on it. It had a good ending for Meg that actually carried into later episodes. People are hating the episode for things about it that aren't even true. I respect opinions, but come on!

Yeah. Patrick having an older sister even though he said he didn't have a sister is excusable since this is coming from the same guy who thought SpongeBob stole his candy bar after eating it seconds earlier and his family doesn't appear very often.
Also, Cosmo having a brother in an episode of The Fairly Oddparents isn't entirely out of the blue either. I mean, considering that Cosmo's brother was revealed to be a con man who scams other fairies, and for that, Wanda probably just said Cosmo was an only child to keep his brother's existence hidden from Timmy since she tried to hide the letter from the latter.
With this episode, we never even get any foreshadowing that Peter even has a sister. No hints. Nothing that suggests Peter even had a sister. I think the reason they added a sister in for Peter is so the writers could somehow make Peter sympathetic to justify all the horrible stuff he's done in past episode - and they failed pretty miserably here. Sorry, but from all the horrible shit he's done, it's too late to sympathize with this guy now. If Karen had been introduced much earlier in the series, or if there were at least hints that Peter even had a sister to begin with, the sympathy could've work. So yeah, Peter doesn't deserve any sympathy, because he's done so many horrible shit he's gotten away scott-free from and his sister was introduced so late that trying to make him sympathetic at this point is rendered futile now.

You know what? Let her die! If she's the one who's responsible for Peter being the way she is, then she deserves to die! Good riddance!

It's not good but for modern Family guy it is okay. It also made me realize just how fucked up Peter's childhood was. Granted it doesn't excuse him from what he's done but between an overly religious, step father, a bully of a half sister and apparently a totally apathetic mother, it's a wonder Peter didn't become even worse! Granted Homer's childhood wasn't idealistic but at least his parents actually love him in spite of themselves. I'm also glad this episode ended the "Ha ha Meg sucks, so let's abuse her." gag/trope for the most part. It's long overstayed it's welcome and should have ended long ago. Like "Seahorse Seashell Party" long ago.

True, very true. It is very possible. Also Peter's birth father was never around so take that one for what you will.

I feel that this episode was made at an attempt to rescue Peter from the Scrappy Heap he's been given since his flanderization in later seasons. In other words, this episode seems like a way to (failing miserably at) making us feel sorry for Peter. Yeah I don't know about anyone else, but it doesn't work with me.

What's next? Is Seth MacFarlene going to make Donald Trump, Lois Griffin's uncle or something? I wonder how well that would go over since Seth likes making commentary on his politics through Brian. Brian is a jerk and it's probably best that Seth not open that can of worms.

That would be stupid if the show did do that. What would happen to that drunk Irishman that claims to be Peter's father? Of course, that would explain why Peter is such a monster.

What is with introducing characters that will likely not play any future role? This is like the second time that Family Guy has done this. I think the first was Brenda, they didn't seem to bring her back after the drama caused by Screams In Silence.
What is a Queef anyways?

1. Brenda actually first appeared with Jeff in "Jerome is the New Black" as a brief gag and excuse for Brian to accidentally tick Glenn off.
2. A queef is a fart from the vagina.

1) Oh, I didn't realize she was used again. I would like to see her interaction with her father, who is now a transsexual woman. I can imagine a numerous of possibilities like Brenda being upset because her father didn't tell her, years of non-communication, Brenda and Glenn's mother, Jeff, and her grandchild. Of course, Family Guy would just make a series of insensitive gags with their relationship.
Family Guy does crack jokes at every demographic and the show usually makes a crucial point. However, with Scream In Silence, it just misses the mark and ends up with a hypocritical moral like "Staying in an abusive relationship is good because Meg is the bad guy if she dares upset her family even if they are wrong for how often they mistreat each other and her."
2) Why is Family Guy even making fun of farts even if it comes from a woman?

Even though I didn't see this episode, I do have to agree on one thing; it does seem completely out-of-place for Peter to have a sister (or siblings in general) since he was the illegitimate son of an Irish drunk. 😐
Unless, however, she was his HALF-sister. Like maybe his mom was in another relationship BEFORE she met his dad. That would make better sense, wouldn't it? ☺️

Maybe, the sister is a step-sister. Perhaps, Peter's stepdad had a daughter before getting with Peter's mother. Maybe, Peter never mentioned her because he didn't want his family to know about his cunt of a step-sister even though they know about his father and stepfather.
Of course, the most likely case is that this idiot was just added because Seth wanted to make fun of tomboyish lesbians or something along those lines.
