I think I may have found the cinematic equivalent to Doggy Poo! I'm dead serious: this movie looks spectacular! It has some of the most real and texturized CGI I've ever seen involving dinosaurs to really make you believe you're in the Cretaceous Period! It doesn't go for using obvious dinosaurs or calling Pteranodons “dinosaurs” either! This has all the potential to be one of the most beautiful looking documentary style films ever made, if not for one major problem: FOX BENT IT OVER AND FUCKED IT TO DEATH!

Ok, that's a big exaggeration right there, but this movie was meddled with horribly before it was released to theatres, very very late into production I might add. You see, Walking with Dinosaurs (no relation to the BBC documentary series, even less so with the meddling) was decided at the last second that voices should be added in for the dinosaurs as a way to draw kids to this movie. That is one of the stupidest and most ill-conceived mistakes for a film I have ever seen! It's obvious by the fact that their mouths don't really move with the dialogue that these dinos weren't meant to talk at all! I think they wanted to make it so we're hearing their thoughts, but that's just dumb.

One movie that can easily be seen as a superior counterpart to this, believe it or not, is Disney's Dinosaur. Yeah, that CGI movie from 2000 Disney made without Pixar that looked really uncanny even for its time and was as boring as tar. Much like this film, it was decided that Dinosaur’s dinosaurs should talk as a way to better interest kids, and like this movie, they were going to have them talk without moving their lips because apparently, making dinosaurs conceivably talk was hard for them; the then CEO Michael Eisner wouldn't have it! He said that it would be a massive failure for Disney to do this! And yes, it is a failure on the part of most any studio to try and pull this. As weak as Dinosaur was, I can respect it enough for its production as Disney's first CGI effort without Pixar holding their hands though.

Instead of coming off like a serious documentary like the live-action framing device will have you believe, this movie desperately wants to rip off films such as The Land Before Time and Ice Age! They went far enough to give our main dinosaurs some kind of voiceover to try and give them a one-note character of some sort. But seeing these realistic dinosaurs "talk" doesn't sound or even remotely look right; it manages to delve into the uncanny valley without looking terrible. It has the potential to be something beautiful, but ends up being one of the most awkward DreamWorks knockoffs ever made. Honestly, John Leguizamo's character Alex is the only character whose voice doesn't grate in my ears; considering he also voiced Sid in Ice Age, that surprised me. But the fact that Patchi's voice actor also did Alvin in those horrible live-action Alvin and the Chipmunks movies doesn't surprise me.

I can't pay attention to the great amounts of detail put into the actual animation with all the obnoxious voice work. And judging by the wonky sections of animation, it's clear it tried to change up what the film was to be way too late to matter. What should be an impressively made documentary is a standard black-and-white morality shlockfest in nature. Non-anthropomorphic wild animals, especially dinosaurs, don't have concepts of good or evil; I mean, you can make that work, but this movie was clearly meant to follow realistic animals on some level with the rule of survival of the fittest in mind. 15 minutes in, and I could tell exactly where the story was going with its forced romance. It isn't as bad as Delgo, but it's irritating nonetheless. If I wanted to watch The Land Before Time, I'd watch The Land Before Time!

This movie is a fascinating anomaly if I do say so myself. Its flaw is very easy to fix, but that flaw practically ruins the entire experience. The whole voiceover thing is so bad that the 3D Blu Ray included a version called the "Cretaceous Cut" which removed all the chatter. But, of course, this version isn't ON the standard DVD and Blu Ray I got! Aside from some wonky animation here and there, I might've found the movie average, maybe even good, without the forced plot and dialogue. I ain't getting a 3D TV and Blu Ray player just to see a not terrible version of an at best awkward and stupid film. Oh and spoilers: They all die! Well, what did you expect from a movie about Late-Cretaceous dinosaurs?

After all the atrocities they committed, it's a wonder that whoever in 20th Century Fox made junk such as this is still allowed their positions.

This movie is a real guilty pleasure, I actually liked it (even if the main character's father died like what happened in The Lion King and Barnyard)

Geesh, this movie makes all the Land Before Time sequels look competent!

Funny enough, the original Land Before Time was also going to be a documentary styled animated film with no dialogue, but (from what I heard) it was Lucas and Spielberg's idea to give the characters speaking voices.  Either way, it still turned out better than this shlock.  I feel really bad for the animators who worked hard on this film, though.

Talk about a waste of potential! This movie could have been educational and just plain awesome. I wouldn't mind if they did a little narration by a professional actor like Morgan Freeman or somebody with a soothing voice. But of course they had to make the dinosaurs talk every godamn second!

Pretty much this, yeah. Morgan Freeman would defintiely work as the narrator for this movie.

This is why I don't have the "I won't review what others have reviewed" rule. I review what I WANT, Beauty and the Beast, Tentacolino, Shark Tale I do whatever the fuck I want, within reason. Here's what I don't usually review:

Films made by Video Brinquedo or Dingo Pictures and the like (shit like this isn't worth dignifying)
We animations as animated atrocities (most people who do web stuff aren't looking for money or a career, so I'm not ripping on stuff like Racist Mario unless it's made by professionals or people who call themselves professionals like Cartoon Hangover or Channel Frederator)
Products of their time (provided I can't put them into context or they weren't around in my time)

I didn't hate this movie, but I did think it was meh. I'll admit it may have been better without the voice-overs, but like you I'm not gonna blow a bunch of cash to try and find out.

Exactly. It could've been alright without the voices and some scenes making it pretty decent.

So true. And I'll admit the animation was great, as well. 'Sigh' Why must studio heads interfere with what could be good movies?

i knew from the trailers that this was just a Dinosaur rip-off, only even more juvenile. (BTW, I don't hate Dinosaur, since I can at least appreciate the technical craft that went into its making, though I will agree having the dinos talk was a massive mistake on Disney's part).

The Dino talk was akward but Disney did it way better.

I'm gonna say what most critics said when it was released: groundbreaking from a technical standpoint, bland and generic on the story level.

We get a full shot of a realistic dinosaur taking a realistic dump!

(Also, what happened to Rugrats Go Wild?)

It didn't gross me out. Also it was very brief. I couldn't get Rugrats Go Wild because it got taken off Netflix. I will however do it another time.

Did the people interfering with it ever watch Wall-E? Thanks to how close to non-existent dialogue was in that film, it stood out and is a much loved classic to this day!

I remember when the first trailer came out; I was moderately excited but not entirely optimistic. I had hoped it would be set either in the Late Jurassic or Late Cretaceous periods, just like in the show, so right from the start it felt very different.

But then the voiceovers were introduced and the film was officially ruined... There was not a single character with a voice that I liked! And John Lenguizamo's faux-Spanish accent was a major turn-off. Speaking of which, Lenguizamo actually voices Sid the Sloth in Ice Age, not Manny.

Jediuser In reply to Albion93 [2016-09-14 18:45:58 +0000 UTC]

This movie ripped off Disney's Dinosaur, right down to the generic kiddie characters. I could tell from the trailer it would be bad.

Also, they really thought they could market this to kids? Like Regulas said, they all die at the end! As Disney and Don Bluth pointed out, that is the one line a kids' movie cannot cross.
