Description Not a realistic view so much, I wanted the feeling of a deep field image ([link] ) but with a more artistic presentation. This is my first contest entry here on dA, so wish me luck

Look great! Would you make a good galaxy tut? I like these galaxies.

Making a tutorial would be difficult because i was experimenting so much when i made these. This is only my second pic with galaxies, and i don't really have a "method" .... i just sort of start painting I can say that it helps to start with a big white X in PS, then run the twirl filter on it, that will give you a good shape for your galaxy to start. From there, it was just a lot of painting, erasing, and painting some more My best advice i think would be to study photos of galaxies, try [link] and you might like this site [link] If you have any specific q's, ask away and i'll do what i can.

This looking really good! Maybe a bit too many galaxies for my taste but they are done so well, each of them deserves to be in the picture. Also the planet textures are really nice.

Thanks I wanted the feel of a deep field image (which usually show dozens if not hundreds of galaxies) so i knew there would be a lot of galaxies and be a little crowded ....... but now I think it might work better without the nearby planets to distract you, leaving the focus only on the galaxies - what do you think?

I don't know; it might be better without the closest planet, but that's up to you. It's a fantastic piece either way.

Most everything is painted in PS, but the planets were done in 3dsm, does that help?

Whats 3dsm??

Regulus36 In reply to Thealmosthalfdead [2010-12-19 21:22:03 +0000 UTC]

3d Studio Max, it's a 3d modeling program and actually you can make planets in just about any 3d modeling program, all you are doing is wrapping a texture map around a sphere (and the map can be made in PS or be satellite imagery or whatever) For example the gas giant texture is a combination of [mostly] Jupiter textures that was heavily modified and painted over.

It's a bit cluttered and the composition is somewhat lacking to be frank. That put aside though - wow! That gas giant look really great, and those galaxies (most of them) looks truly superb (wish I could do it as well)! I'd recommend studying the composition of some high quality works though, because it's an area where you need some more practice. Been browsing around your gallery and your technical skills supersedes that of your compositional eye so to speak. Just a tip to really get to the edge

Seeing as how it is reminiscent of a Hubble deep field image, i knew i would get some 'cluttered' remarks i appreciate the feedback though, i have been thinking it may have been better to lose the planets and leave the focus on the galaxies, think that would help?

Yeah i spent so long just practicing techniques and such, lately i'm trying to improve my composition.... so crits/feedback are always appreciated

tadp0l3 In reply to Regulus36 [2010-12-15 11:58:26 +0000 UTC]

It would definitely help imo. Deep field images are cool, and though you need some kind of thought over composition even in them, I guess you're somewhat freer.

I guess you could still include a planet for artistic and compositional purposes, I'd say the uppermost planet looks kinda in place - the close up and the gas giant really doesn't add anything to the picture though (side from the fact that the gas giant has a very nice texture to it).

Again thanks, I may revisit this one, but right now I'm trying to wrap up several other projects. I think when I do, I will try it with a simpler focus and composition

Thanks - all the galaxies are painted over to look different but since they are very small some of the spirals look VERY similar try zooming in and comparing the spiral arms of them
