The privatisation of the justice system and mass incarceration helps to aggravate systemic racism, since many of the ways prisons get more people incarcerated is targeted at or disproportionately affects black and / or latinx people

No, actually. You pay the same out of your taxes. And the running cost of prisons are made so low (making conditions poorer) that a big sum of the money they're given goes straight in their pockets

But Rehkael! If you don't punish inmates they'll commit more crime! The worse the punishment, the more they'll not want to come back
Actually, it just destroys their sense of dignity and humanity so that they will re-enter prison in droves.
Plus we already know from Sweeden that rehabilitation is the way to go

But Rehkael! If you were sexually abused / were robbed / lost someone to drugs / whatever, your views would change!
Hmm. CSA survivor. Was in a long term abusive relationship. Was born prematurely from the shock of a robbery. Lived a large chunk of my life in a drug filled slum... Try me.

But Rehkael! What about the victims of crime??
Well, since many criminals go from petty crime like shoplifting to murder, rehabilitating early on would make less victims. You can't take back what happened to someone once it's happened, but you can work on prevention.

But Rehkael! Some people can't be fixed.
Sadly. For those rare cases then life is the only way to keep people safe.
