Description
One more for my bird collection! This one is a tui, an endemic (and very loud) bird from New Zealand, perched on a New Zealand flax (known as harakeke in Māori). Tui are quite widespread in New Zealand, so fortunately they are not endangered.
We first saw them at the Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari. They were being very noisy, making different sounds. Sometimes they sounded like regular birds singing, but with added clicks, creaks, wheezes and all sorts of sounds. They have a wide variety of sounds they can produce, and like parrots they can also imitate human speech (search for Woof Woof the talking tui on Youtube for some videos). The adults are easily recognisable by the tuft of white feathers on the front of the neck. They can look black from a distance, but in the sunlight they have a green-blue shine. This particular one was perched on a tree and fluffing up its feathers, so I liked how it looked all cocky and showy.
