Description "These priestesses are very rare in Sabah, they contribute greatly to the culture and tradition of the Kadazan tribe. As years come and go, these priestesses who came will also go..."

Hi guys!
This is a picture of Bobohizan, a priestess of my tribe/ethnic - Kadazan.
They've very beautiful and elaborated costumes, especially the headdress, I love them a lot. I've always wanted to paint something related to my own tribe, I'm always proud of it and trying every way to express that. And I'm glad I've done this, despite the crazy details on her haha~

My previous work ([link] ) kept flashing back to me when I was working on the piece, I can't believe I improved a lot within less a month! *gives a pat on the back*
I guess I still have lots to learn, and hopefully when I look back at this piece and compare, there's improvement going on as well. My only disappointment in this painting (at the moment) is failing to make her look more asian, I should have a reference beside me! >.<

Hope you guys like it!

It's refreshing to see something painted out of respect for one's cultural roots

Like you said, you should have used a reference for the picture - you might want to use this as a reference for future paintings (it's a useful guide for drawing people of different ethnicities) [link]
Also the nose seems to be at an odd angle. In this case, it looks crooked - the tip of the nose is pointed away from the center.
The lower arm-armpit looks a little too large i think - in the future you should look out for the anatomical proportions of your figures before colouring. One trick i learned is to look at the picture flipped horizontally (you can do so in any painting software by flipping the canvas horizontally). Or, if it's on paper, let your drawing face a bright light, while you look at the back of the paper. It'll be easier to notice tiny mistakes this way.

Anyway, i like how this is colorful, yet not ARGH RAINBOWZ!!!1!11 (if you know what i mean ) The patterns on the headdress is lovely. Also, the little dots in the background are a nice touch : )
So keep it up! (Btw, sorry if my explaining skills turn you off. Aaand greetings from Penang )

Bobohizan still exist, right? But yeah...the numbers are small these days due to no one or the bobohizan couldn't find themselves any protege to continue their legacy~

Well... mainly because most people are disconnected from nature and these priestesses are very associated to the nature. There's a lot of animism going around that very much contradicted the scientific modern life now. The sacrifices rituals and other related ceremonies of a Bobohizan... not everyone has that courage to run them, it's too 'unnecessary' for urban life dwellers but the truth of such activities in fact, reminded us to respect nature... That's what I thought..

Yeah, that's what I thought as well. Not many urban dwellers or the young generation these days care to go through the rites and rituals as modern Bobohizan. But, as long as a young generation like you still remembers them, I think they will be preserve in everyone's mind~
