Not only do the locals divide into blue, red, and a handful of purple, they divide themselves even further with colors.
The Yellow, aka exterminators, are the elite troops. They were originally assigned to fight the Inhumans, then remained for various other tasks. They are not necessarily the best in the world, but skilled fighters who specialize in making sure that their target is destroyed, banished, and never returns. And since dying and not resurrecting afterwards in the Loop is a difficult trick to pull off, the Yellow often have to take one position for a very long time and repel the enemy several times until they learn. The Yellow most often use exhaustion tactics, as their main goal is not to cause death, but to remove the enemy from where they are.

The Green (Piercers) originated a bit later. What sets them apart from the regular fighters is their preference for close combat. Consequently, they're better at it than at anything else, though they still have ranged weapons and can shoot. The Green are the "surgeons" of operations. They are often used to surround the enemy and quickly destroy them in the pocket. They are also good in small, crammed spaces with limited escape routes. Some greens also have a useful "mutation" - a disabled friendly fire, while any other colors have it enabled - which gives them a big advantage in small spaces.

The color itself doesn't really matter much: at the time, the dye had not yet been tamed, it was assigned randomly because it was coincidental. Despite the fact that color is used to tag it all, the color hierarchy is far from a linear structure.
Anyone can become green, anyone can become yellow, but a yellow cannot be green - a yellow must be good at any distance. You can become yellow either in one step or "to be promoted" from a green. Not to mention that your "career" will always end at purple if you decide to become one, no matter what color you start with. The Purple live in a doomed world that they have created.
