i have an honest question... What is the point of 'adopting' an artwork... I honestly see no point in it at all... I see all these people giving money away for a drawn character... I don't get it, can someone please explain this to me.

You are adopting the actual character. You buy the character so you can use it in stories, or however you'd like to use it. You get to use it as if it were your own Original Character (which it is but the design just isnt by you). Many people buy adoptables and have fun creating a personality, story, and outfits for it.
So you buy the drawn character, but you make it your own once you've paid for it. So there is a point, you're adopting a new original character for yourself...

Commissioning can mean anything really; paying someone to draw characters you've already made up, to draw characters from a favorite TV series or book series, etc.
Adopting is different; you're paying for a design that someone else thought of that you want. Commissions usually have set prices and different styles, while adoption prices range differently from artist-to-artist.
"Commissioning characters" can also be referred to as "custom adopts". If you're commissioning someone to make a new original designed character, you're also adopting that design.

Well, for me, I like adopting a character and designing their stories based on their artistic design. I have my own written OCs that I do commission of artists, but it's nice getting a new character whose physical design is already decided; I'm just filling out the biographical details. ^_^
Does that make sense? I'm only a writer -- no drawing skills at all -- and occasionally, I struggle with character creation on the physical appearance level. Adopting alleviates that burden.
I adopted this character last weekend, and designed his story after he was deemed mine. I didn't have a character like him until I adopted him, and now I have this awesome character and a lot of story ideas. ^_^

I see! My artistic talent lies within writing as well. I can't draw to save my life, but I can come up with a good story off the top of my head and write poetry with ease!
Ah! that's why I didn't see the point of these, I like building the characters around the story, not the story around the character. (Unless its Fanfiction! 
I will definitely check it out, I love a good story. Especially amateur/hobbyist works, they are always so much better than published novels and such.

Oh, I'm the same! I can create a story often on a whim (or develop it from a dream I had), but a definite weakness of mine is character creation. I will know the characters role in a story, yet I really struggle with their physical design.
Oh, believe me, I was dubious about the whole adoption thing as well for a long time. Didn't understand it at all. But after adopting a couple of characters, I realized I couldn't let them sit in my stable without a story. So I thought, and pondered, and daydreamed until their name and backstory came to me. It was a great rush of inspiration!
(Admittedly, it might just be an injection of an alternate form of "fan fiction," designing a story around a pre-existing character design. I do love writing AU fan fics, so maybe that's the attraction. lol)
My latest adopts, Levi and Ritsu, have been invading my dreams and giving me so many ideas. It's really quite the rush for a writer to experience; I've been so unmotivated because of long working hours lately, so these adoptees are giving my creativity a jolt.
