Amazing work! just a small tip: Try to stretch the front legs a little less, unless you meant to do that, in which case: Great job!

anyone can animate! start as soon as you want! it may not be perfect in the beginning, but heck.
if you plan on animation, I recommend pencil2d software. it's free and easy to use! if you want to do 3d animation, I recommend using Blender. it's also free, but a little harder to figure out if you don't use tutorials.

Thank you! I have always tried to animate but the only thing that I could find was Flipaclip which is very hard to use... tysm!

Seriously one of the most stylized run cycles I've ever seen, I can really tell that you drew it! It's really awesome.

Lovely- remember if you ever do horses that equine backs are too stiff for a true rotary gallop and they instead have "leads".

Again good timing on your frames, one thing in animation the walk/trot/run cycles are always the trickiest

So freaking smooth, how do you make them so smooth? 0:

Remarin In reply to LizzDragonLord [2017-07-27 09:26:04 +0000 UTC]

If you'd ask me a month ago I would say that the more frames the smoother,, but now I think that that's only partly true because either you need to be able draw the exact same shapes and proportions over and over in different poses right off the bat,, or you need to be willing to go back and correct the shapes that are out of place or are morphing between frames too much x: (be moderately stubborn with it,, theres still lots of things I feel are too wobbly-looking but I also dont want to spend multiple days on a sketchy run cycle)
But I'd say that the more you do it, the better you'll get at it

And still, im really not an expert and havent even taken any classes yet, so theres a high probability that there are other answers to the question of how to make things smooth 8I this is only what I -think- might be the case after a couple handful of animations

EDIT: oh! and I didn't even think of this:  divide the motion between the frames more or less evenly! (if the gap between pose A and pose B is narrow, things will look slowed down, if the gap is big, things will look fast,, sometimes you want things to be faster/slower,, but make it a concious decision!) If there's too big of a gap between frames, it'll of course appear choppy-looking!! I completely forgot about that,, I spent a lot of time re-arranging the position of limbs because the gaps were either too close or too far apart between frames :0

nekonotaishou [2017-07-26 15:33:13 +0000 UTC]

This is really good! I think you're getting there For the head, I think of it this way: when the spine bends the hips down for the collected pose, the spine moves the head up as, and as the dog stretches out, the head is "allowed" to stretch down and out. Hope that makes sense?

holy crap that reference!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Remarin In reply to nekonotaishou [2017-07-26 15:43:23 +0000 UTC]

Looking at the reference it looked more like the head bobbing is partly used as counterbalance// or to lead to movement,, like it moves up a tad earlier before the spine is bent at its max, to avoid tipping forward,,, and is thrust out simultaniously as the legs are thrown forward
..or something like that??
It's difficult to tell the timing,, before sketching, I screen recorded the vid, and slowed it down/paused it,, to look what is placed where at the max stretch/bent poses

I just freaking realized that my animation is so freaking simular to yours. My fucking God how the hell does that happen!?! I spent two months on this animation! I allegedly made 50 frames for the sketch I have no idea why but I'm so so sorry if it looks like I'm stealing I swear to god I'm not! Im really upset I don't want anybody going crazy and spamming you and saying im stealing. I'm sorry if I'm causing any trouble.

Remarin In reply to Electric-Bolt-Draws [2017-09-23 19:14:28 +0000 UTC]

No worries no worries! I don't care much even if there is a case of someone copying or heavily referencing my art, ( plus these are mainly my practice animations so I wouldn't even mind if people use it as reference if it helps them)
Though the main thing that seemed a bit too similar to be coincidence, is how the facial features and head movement are very alike in your run animation? Eye shape, mouth shape, ear shape, even the small tuft of fur right beneath the jaw.
And the reason why the head movement also stands out to me a bit, is because I myself know that the movement in my run cycle is a tad wrong, and not yet natural enough,, so it would be quite a bit weird if you just happened to do the exact same mistaken head movement that I did x:

Though again, I don't mind it much. If it were a still image I would simply think that you might just have worked off of memory, but animation is a very specific thing where you'd have to very lucky to replicate a motion from memory, even more so if it were an accident.

-If- you did use my work as guideline, you might just want to be a bit more careful to not base yourself too heavily on it. Especially if it is artwork that is made for someone else,, and even more so if money is involved ;I

Electric-Bolt-Draws In reply to Remarin [2017-09-23 19:21:30 +0000 UTC]

I didn't use you art. I actually used a gif of a real wolf running but I didn't trace over it. I do draw my heads on how you described but it was a gift for someone, so no money was involved if you were wondering. I don't usually post my good art on here I usually post old stuff like unfinished animations and art.

:U That too, I guess, now that you mention it.

I tend to think of the back muscles/tendons and the limits they impose on the body; like they're not infinitely stretchy, they will start moving another body part when they reach their limit. General "rule" I've seen others put forth is that "the hindquarters and the head sync up", but I find that that's not true across the board for all animals/all gaits

Slowing it down/framing through it and going for extremes is exactly the thing pros do; it's so much easier to build out the rest of the cycle if you hit those key extremes well. Also take note of the highest and lowest points for the head, chest/shoulders, and butt.

Cycles are complex things, because the whole body is moving together and there's weight and wind and (for animal animators) all these dang legs. But I think you're on the right track here; you've got reference, you've got anatomy, you're conscious of weight and balance. I eagerly await more animations from you
