Description
This is my piece for Nordanner's Summer Splash event week 5 - Familiar Friday! Featuring my mare Parvula, Cat, and a bunny rabbit (and her sire Maximus RIP <3 )
Since I've been out of town for two days, my art time has been cut a bit. Needless to say, this is not my best. I normally draw my lines traditionally, scan them, then color my art digitally. This is with my lines done digitally. It's not terrible. In fact, considering I haven't done digital lines in eons it's not too bad, but definitely not my best. I will update the WIP if I get it finished in time e_e
That being said...STORY time! I was inspired and know full well that what happens in the story is actually NOT how Cat works as a familiar. I can't kill the muse, so just ran with it...
"Shelby...what's wrong with her...?" Misato questioned, an edge of uncertainty clear the rider's voice. The pair had walked up to the paddock which held one of the Knox Farm Nordanner mares within it's fencing. The mare, Parvula, laid sprawled out, and for all intents and purposes seemed mopey at best. This was odd behavior for the normally friendly, perky mare.
Letting out a harsh sigh, Shelby crossed her arms and leaned against the white board fence as she looked on at the mare. "I know she wasn't exactly raised AROUND her sire, but the news of his passing came across and when she was informed..." She paused, pushing away from the fencing for a moment and drew her hand out in front of her, as if displaying the mare. "This is how she's been since then. I don't know why she's so touched by it..."
Frowning, Misato pressed her lips together, a crease forming in the midst of her forehead and a look of confusion spreading across her features. "It doesn't make any sense...but...is there anything we can really do? I've seen horses go through a myriad of emotions, but grief for another they hardly knew?" Shaking her head, she crossed her arms on her chest. "I hope she is able to get out of this funk soon...poor girl..."
Nodding curtly, Shelby replied, "It's why I've been checking up on her regularly. I'm concerned, but what else can I do? She could probably use a friend..."
"Perhaps putting her in a paddock with a few of the Spring foals might cheer her up?" Misato offered, turning away from the paddock and glancing back at the foals barn far behind them.
"Maybe...tomorrow. We'll try that tomorrow. The day's almost done and we'll bring her back into her stall soon anyways...start out fresh tomorrow, right?" There was a very slight hint of hope in her voice, but it was easy to miss. Turning away, Shelby made her leave and Misato went off in a different direction, leaving the mare to herself.
It was quiet, nothing by the cool Summer breeze to keep the mare company. Small, field animals moved through the warmth of the evening and could be heard nibbling at the goodies in the grass around her. She huffed out a sigh, her muzzle very close to the ground, pushed forth a puff of dirt away from her. She closed her eyes for a moment, grieving the loss of her sire, despite not knowing him. She still felt the loss tug at her somewhere down deep inside of her. It hurt. She had never experienced such a pain, being a young mare.
A soft, almost inaudible mew rose her from her revere causing her to open her eyes and slightly lift her head to figure out what the cause of the noise was. A very small kitten, mere feet away from her, stood, head cocked in confusion as it looked on at the mare. Her gaze shifted to eye the kitten wearily, offering nothing but a few slow blinks before letting her head rest low once again.
Your heart hurts, young one. Let me help you.
As she closed her eyes once more, a warmth filled that cold void deep inside her and on a very earthly level she could feel the spirit of her sire pulse through her blood, feel his presence return to the world of the living. The thought brought her solace, joy, and after a few fleeting moments caused her to flitter open her eyes, glancing at the kitten once more. The kitten moved closer, licking the mare's leg, before bolting off after a field mouse nearby. Parvula watched her go, feeling a sense of fulfillment returning to her. She slowly stood up, shaking her head and sending her long mane flowing around her, before she trotted off after the kitten to watch her play.
