Description
date of drawing: December 2002Gandalf battles the balrog on the bridge of Khazad Dum
The original drawing was, I believe, 18x24. I took pictures of it with my K1000 (Pentax) camera so it would fit onto the scanner. The image turned out EXTREMELY dark when I scanned it. Fortunately, I had good old Photoshop to make the colors more accurate

Hmmm...it's been almost six years. Colored pencils and some sort of charcoal...don't quite remember.

At the time, I was thinking of adding the Balrog's whip. I ran out of time, though. But, looking at the drawing now, it would probably be a distraction. A friend told me the wings (that is, if a Balrog has them...which is debatable) look as if they were expanding...the darkness of its shadow becoming more intense. If I remember correctly, that was Tolkien's intention.

That was a sad moment for me too when I first saw the film...Gandalf being my favorite character. I thought he died. And then people were telling me that he didn't.
