Yeah, I know about that picture. Been looking for clean, high res version. Do you think render would be better if you used the bigger one? And I think you could (if you like) enhance the entire picture. Love those fireflies around Taki.
No, it's really good, actually. I know some Takuji Kawano's (Bamco lean character illustrator) designs and promo arts have that touch to them. Maybe you could add some (in Gimp there is artistic/cartoon effect) where you can add a comicbook bit like effect. Makes art even better.

When I made myself a wallpaper out of the bigger one, I pick edited small mistakes (like white dots, irregularities, some of scan lines) and then slightly tune with cartoon for better black on certain areas like hair, edges of kimono and eyes. It was not perfect (your render is better) but serves a purpose. So you could try that. Maybe a bit of sharpen, but not too much because I find it improves black you already can improve with cartoon. And I think full pic would benefit of your style.
But definitely your render looks amazing.
