Hello all! It's been a while.
I'm sure we're all a little bit excited with the release of the SuMo starters upon other things. I couldn't help but contribute to the frenzy by drawing them in a realistic style (using the term realistic here as I'm basing the Pokémon off real-life animals and/or anatomical proportions).
Design process
Rowlet: A cute little owl, how exciting! I was inspired by a mix of barn owls and saw-whet owls for this guy.
Litten: Based on your average house cat. Not sure if the final evo will be lion-like, tiger-like etc. so pretty standard. I made the hackles on its back like quills that flare red when angry.
Popplio: It's got ears and rotating hind legs, therefore this guy is a sea lion of some kind (no, not a seal). I didn't want to make the nose toooo big, and decided a furry frill was the best way to go since Vaporeon has the fish frill.
Realistic Aggron will also be uploaded this week!
Drawn with Photoshop CS5 and a Wacom Cintiq 24HD tablet. About 4 hours total, with lots of references used. Thanks for looking.

I based Litten off a house cat, Torracat off bobcats/lynxes, and Incineroar will be a tiger (mostly).

Thanks! Yes, I see where you're coming from regarding the feminine look, in the same way that female Incineroars would look masculine.
However being a biologist, I try not to assign gender to organisms based on looks alone. Because in nature, a sea lion with long hair, large frills and ornaments may very well be male, and actually selected for (if we're talking sexual selection). I have started the rest of the evolution lines and I think the way I've tackled Brionne/Primarina so far has removed a lot of the perceived feminity and looks more natural

Mm, I suppose that makes sense. I mean, we really can't tell for sure sometimes, and heck, male birds in the wild have brighter colored plumage than the females. Good to know that it's gonna look natural when you draw the evolutions.

I started with Litten and I was rather disappointed with the final evolution... but that's just me

Could be! I've had a few people on Reddit get shitty with me regarding Rowlet's animal basis. I mean, unless you actually ask Sugimori himself which owl species he based Rowlet and its evo's on, we may never know for sure! Definitely seems to be rather barn owl-like for now though.

I really wasn't too big on the new starters which really upset me because I've always loved Pokemon, but your interpretations have helped them grow on me.
Definitely like the owl the most since i'm obsessed with owls, but I also really like the cat. Not too big on the seal still though..but your design is amazing.
Hoping the evolutions help them grow on me more.
