I have to admit, I didn't like Val at all. But right here I can understand him. I don't think that tail is the only problem - I got feeling from previous pages that Kris acts towards Val little bit more arogantly, somehow different than I remember it from pages when Kris didn't know about Val being different. And that must be hard for anyone used to and at the same time sensitive towards such a behavior. I love your skill to portrait emotions

Val's only problem is that he doesn't accept himself for who he is, and deep inside doesn't expect anyone else to accept him. It's like both fear of being mistreated and waiting to be mistreated at the same time. And just like you said, Val mistook Kris' changed behavior as arrognace, while in reality Kris just tried very had to show his support. He should've shown some tact and understanding instead, though.

I consider this to be similar to a white person dating a black person and fetishizing their hair. It's really cool to see this topic being discussed in an alternative light.

Or, you could compare it to coming out of a closet only to find out that all your friends now talk only about your sexual preferences, like "oh, so you like girls, hey, do like this one, or, look, how about that one, or the one over there?" They mean no harm, but this way of showing support kinda voilates one's personal space. This may be not the prefect example, but this is how I see this situation in general.
Also, hiding tail is a spoiler, so I'll keep it to myself for now =3

I think, Val doesn't really accept himself for who he is and therefore doesn't expect anyone else to accept him. So he goes all into aggressive defence, saying himself everything he is afraid to hear from Kris.
