Oh wow. What a beautiful portrait of one of my favorite animals! Hyenas are awesome - no matter the specie. Wonderful work!Β Β

Well ... the spots just aren't that obvious on these individuals ...Β Β They were spotted, though, at least according to some cave paintings.

Thanks! I'm so used to paint traditional I wan't my digital work to look the same. Although I must admit that the "out of focus", or blurred, snowflakes are easier to do digitally, even if the effect can be done with traditional colors too.

What species is this?

Renum63 In reply to RaishinL [2016-04-16 18:35:57 +0000 UTC]
The cave hyena ( or the Ice Age spotted hyena) I'm not sure if there's a consensus over whether it was its own species or a form of the extant spotted hyena.

HA HA. Β You captured the pack behavior beautifully! Β Something has sure caught their attention. Β Lunchtime maybe?

This is a detail of a bigger painting. So what you can't see here is that they are actually having their lunch when something else suddenly gets their attention. Thank you!

Oh yes, the striped hyena! I actually haven't reflected on that before, but the striped had an (Mid-) Pleistocene Eurasian distribution, too. I really have to remember this for future illustrational purposes. Thanks for bringing it up!

Man if you did a graphic novel on Plestiocene fauna, that would be WICKED.
Can you do Smilodon next? Megalania? Deinotherium?
