Well it definitely isn't speed painting. Getting the references is often the hardest part, and one has to be a bit lucky too to capture a moment like this, for example (the bison licking it's muzzle). I prefer to use my own reference images and observations to base my paintings on. Time spent depends on the image of course. A simple composition like this, maybe 1-2 days (the painting process).

I thought it was a photograph, great job on rendering all the lil details. I like the blues in the nose and under the eye.

This is just fantastic. All these hairs you made in such different tones, depending on light coming from the bison's right side O.O

Thanks. Yeah, it's kind of therapeutic, to work with the colors and the small differences of shades, I can totally loose myself in it...

That's so true, I absolutely understand you. Playing with colours and shadings can be like a game, a really relaxing game.

I almost thought it was a photo edited European Bison (though I guess it is based on a picture). Amazing.

It's based on the skull of the steppe bison "Blue Babe" and, yes, for the exterior I have used photo studies of European bison (taken by me). I considered making its head darker, more like the American bison, but I kind of prefer the reddish nuances of the European species. Thanks.

You almost got me with the two previous ones, but when I saw the thumbnail of this one I really thought you'd just taken a picture. Awesome work!

It's interesting how some paintings have that quality (looking like photos as thumbnails). It's the light that does it, I think. Thank you!

Thanks. No doubt steppe bisons were impressive, bisons (american and european) still are.
