Gumball: Listen, man, if you weren't me, I'd punch you in the face!
Gumball 2011: I bet you're not stupid enough to punch yourself, pal!
Gumball: Alright, you asked for it! (He punches him in the gut, which also effected him.) Ow! You were right. That was a stupid idea.

While personally I prefer the later seasons (my personal favourite being season 2) I understand where you're coming from.Β Season 1 had a raffish and innocent charm to it that just can't be matched.
However, I kinda dislike Season 1 for the same reason you mention i.e. there are too many mean spirited episodes towards Gumball, when he did little to deserve it. Later on he becomes wiser and snarkier (which I rather enjoy) but ironically, karma doesn't hit him so hard anymore.
Oh well, all that aside, this pic is very good.

Season 2 is definitely up there with Season 1, I guess my nostalgia and love for season 1 gives it the upper-hand.
I do think the show has gone tremendously down hill with each passing season (it's hit an all time low with season 6) and I guess it's because the more the show tried to focus on being meta as shit, focusing away from the softer, whimsical nature that season 1, 2 and (for the most part) 3 gave, the less desire I've had to keep up with it.
I think the worst of it is that the characters are all just shitheads for the most part now, compared to how they used to be. For example, Nicole and Gumball had some of the warmest interactions in the old eps; like 'Gummypuss', when Gumball freaked out about her being 'stolen' in "The Plan", Nicole's proud reaction to him in "The Date". Even "The Fridge" could be argued as this because while Nicole did all of that shit to him, she just wanted him to be like her because she saw the potential for it in him. As of season 6, the two probably act the coldest towards each other than the rest of the entire family. (Gumball actually visibly flinching around Nicole when she gets even slightly frustrated, Nicole generally seems to flip out on Gumball more than Darwin and Anais,Β Gumball's uncaring attitude towards her situation in "The Parents", etc)

I have to admit that the show's quality declined as time went on but that's to be expected with any long running show and honestly, compared to most cartoons TAWOG's drop in quality was not nearly as sharp as I feared.
But I also agree that season 6 is by far the weakest. Personally I always felt that even the weakest episodes of TAWOG have something likeable or redeemable qualities to them but season 6 gave us the first and only episode I absolutely detest "The Rival". The episode was way too mean spirited, the plot was ridiculous and it just hadΒ to insult the ending of "The Choices" which is probably the fan favourite episode of all time.
I also gotta agree that it's a real shame that we don't get to see those "warm interactions" (especially between Gumball and Nicole) anymore. Personally I liked "The Fridge". Nicole was just "being cruel to be kind" because she wanted Gumball to succeed. And if you think about it, her extreme methods make sense sinceΒ considering how often the family depends on her standing up to others.
Honestly, the show only occasionally made an effort to show family bonding moments and for the most part typically focused on dark comedy. e.g. canonically Nicole has only ever called her son "Gummypuss" in two episodes IIRC. I guess that's why such moments resonate with the fans so strongly. And as you've shown me, when the show runners drop the ball, the fans pick it up and help fill the void.Β
Oh well. Season 6 still churned out some good episodes like "The One" and "The Founder" and maybe it's for the best that the show is ending with it and that they're quitting while they're ahead.

FINALLY, someone said it. I could go on a huge tangent about why I'm such a fan of season 1 and why it's my favorite season, but everything really just meshed well together. The older style was better, the world was better with how it mixed both realistic and cartoon elements, and the characterizations were better.

I thought the season 1 version as ghosts as they previously died like some of the cast from poltergeist (the movie) so they got different actors for season 2.

SessonΒ 3's a great season too, I just feel like everything after that was sort of losing it's balance.

I'll be honest and say that 'The Lady' 'The One', 'The Anybody', 'The Neighbor', and 'The Transformation' are great imho, but everything else I find to be either hit-or-miss, or awful.
Case in point, The Rival falls into the latter category. That almost topped 'The Robot' in being my least favorite episode.

Usually I just watch and not worry about grading them. But I do get annoyed when they cram too many Richard episodes in.
