I love cat faces when the ears are folded flat! In photos though, not when I'm petting them.

This character in the story is ivory white, but I'll probably try painting him all sorts of ways. That's another problem with this sculpture; I have painted a couple test pieces, and this sculpt doesn't look that great painted! Some sculptures are like that. I'd like to just sell him with a simple tea stain.

That's understandable. I suppose in that case I could take the risk and trying painting him myself. That way I could have him look however I want. I have a whole bunch of acrylic paints that my mother used to use for painting on wood. Do you know if acrylic sticks well to gypsum? What type of paint does your business use to airbrush some of the dragons, just out of curiosity?

We use acrylic paint. It works great. We use the fluid kind because most of the painting is done with an airbrush.
We do have a line of "Paint Your Own" sculptures that are sold unpainted, but I haven't decided if this piece will be sold as a PYO or not.
If it turns out to be as hard to paint as it seems so far, maybe it will be!

Is this the one that was stolen, or a second attempt?

This is the second one. It was cast from the mold the rough original was made from, but that had almost no detail, so I've been slowly working on restoring it. This has been a very low priority job, so I set it aside for years. I did finish one other version, but just didn't like it!

Absolutely gorgeous! What a great expression!
I've always been curious about working with plaster but haven't got up enough nerve to try. Can you work "back and forth" with it - meaning additive and subtractive?

Reptangle In reply to coyohti [2019-01-26 22:27:14 +0000 UTC]
Normally plaster is purely a subtractive medium.
I do add to plaster, but it is complicated!
I add onto it with wax, or Apoxy clay.
The apoxy clay sticks to the plaster well, but to make the added part match perfectly, I have another mold made on the sculpture I have added to, and cast a new sculpture from that mold to continue detailing it. This way the whole thing is homogeneous.
If your sculpture is smooth and you plan to paint it, adding apoxie will probably work well without needing these extra steps..
It is possible to add new plaster to a hard plaster piece, but that is tricky also, and the added part will almost always be different in hardness from the sculpture. This makes blending the new part onto the sculpture difficult if you want to continue to carve it.

Wow, thank you for such a detailed reply! Plaster sounds pretty challenging (I'm not good with pure subtractive) but I'd still like to try it some time. Lately I've been using Monster Clay which is wax-based and very forgiving. The downside, for me at least, is that it must be molded and cast to get a permanent copy and my skills in that area are shaky at best.

That's why Sculpy and polymer clays are so awesome! You can add, subtract and bake 'em to be permanent.

I love the instant gratification of polymer clays but I tend to find them difficult to work with. Last time I worked with it I build up what I thought was a really solid armature and then covered it with Apoxy Sculpt to ensure (I thought) that it would make a good base for the polymer clay. I used Sculpey Firm for the basic shape and then a Super Sculpey/Firm mix for details and ultimately the whole thing started cracking. It even cracked the Apoxy Sculpt. ;_;
I'm curious if you've tried Monster Clay? Aside from having to mold and cast the results it is hands-down my favorite clay to work with. It's additive, subtractive (so fun to carve), and one can even melt it down completely and pour it into molds. Uh oh...just talking about it makes me want to get my hands back on the clay!

No I haven't tried monster clay. I'll get some! I try everything I can find.
Sculpey IS difficult to work with. Takes practice to learn how to not mush up one side while you work on the other. That's why I like to use plaster for what I do. It's harder to wreck.
I have had Sculpey crack too. That is a problem with large sculptures. It will also crumble to bits if you leave it a long time without baking it!

Unfortunately this Ayonah kirin isn't in scale with the Sir garden sculpt, he is a bit bigger.
I guess that doesn't matter though, since the character in the story could change size if he wanted to, being a deity.
