I actually had to come back to see this. Sometimes I wonder how I miss great pieces like this!

I'd love to do more like this but it's so much work trying to find the right stock images that are also the right resolution. I have about 5 that I've started and never completed!

This can be called either a photo composite, photo manipulation or photo illustration. Try searching on some of the PS tutorial sites for composition tuts. Here's a good place to start: [link]

Yes and no, lol. I started out in magazine print production and retail print purchasing. I got sick of it and went back to school (NYU) and got a certificate in multimedia technology. Then I went to work at Entertainment Weekly and got pulled into retouching by necessity, the people they had on-staff were horrible at it! I was already proficient with color corrections from my production experience, I learned my Photoshop basics at NYU, and learned the rest on the job over the course of about 2 years. I also did an intensive one week course in color management back in 2003 that I'd highly recommend to anyone considering a career in retouching or pre-press. I am considering going back to school again to get my photography degree, finally!

It's Really hard to work with fire in manipulations such as this, I think that that was the hardest part. wasn't it?
Very well done.

Since the stock was shot perfectly, against a black background, it was actually pretty easy to mask it out using the extract filter. Just paint over all the fire, click on the isolate foreground color option and it will drop out the black background. You just need to do it a few times to get the full range of the fire. Another tutorial for me to post lol!

I'm thinking about doing a tutorial on how I did the fire. Think anybody would care?
