Description Hello all! Sorry for being so slow with the updates. I haven't been drawing much, because FINALS
Anyway... this is a drawing where I tried to depict the merging of old and new.. A geisha girl with modern clothes and minimalistic hair. Past combined with present. Or something.

Anywho. This was supposed to be a speedpaint but I got a little carried away Oh well.

3 hours, PS CS6.

As a concept this is great, but it feels a little unfinished to me. Some suggestions that I think might enhance;
- A heavier texture in the background
- Consider using a bit of that blue that you have under her eye as a pattern on the girl's shirt. It should make the design pop a bit more.
- That "thigh gap" seems a bit off, not sure it's even needed, but it might work better if you have a darker/heavier background going on.
- I think the hair could benefit from some tonal texturing too.

In general though, I like it. I just think it needs more attention to detail to really showcase your talents.

sorry i am not an artist but i think i can say sth about that too.
the background: i think the background fits perfectly in because the girl and her eyes should catch the eyes if u look at the upper corners, it is grey there this is good in my opinion because it shows the dark colours at the bottom of the picture again.
Blue on shirt? i dont think it is a good idea because the face should get the attention of the viewer and not her outfit.
"thigh gap": i dont know exectly what u mean ? the gap between her legs is trendy and it seems authentic to this skinny girl if u mean the gap between her top and her jeans thatis just fashion i think its a personal thing if u like it or not.
Hair: u cant put a dark grey in there because the dark grey jeans is so close near her hair this wont fit in. and it is a own style to paint she just combined it with the "normal" one. it shows something abstract what this picture needs it makes it a bit more interesting

i dont think that ur critique fits:/ in my opinion your critique isnt applicabble sorry fourteenthstar

Hello! Thank you so much for the critique, I really appreciate the time and effort you've put in studying this work and finding so many suggestions for me (:
I will address your suggestions one at a time:

Background texture: I worry about this on the pretense of overwhelming the character and losing her in the background. With the composition and the hair in a minimalistic style, do you think the contrast would be enough to maintain separation and keep the character as the main focus?

Blue on shirt: I really wanted the eyes and mouth to pop out of this drawing, hence being the only things truly in color. One this I was considering, though, was overlaying a gradient of orange to blue subtley over the entire picture so that it blends a bit better while still maintaining the pop. What do you think of this idea?

Thigh gap: I think you're completely right lol. I'm influenced too much by the media and people saying girls without a thigh gap aren't attractive. It's not true and rather unnecessary.

Hair: What level of texturing do you think that the hair could use? I was aiming for a contrast of minimalistic with detailed, but I worry that I didn't press the juxtaposition quite enough.

Thank you again for your time, I really do appreciate it greatly!!

I think you are right on track with the background texture as long as it's a subtle texture, it doesn't need to be a complete shocker of one. I'd find a nice texture and blend it in with really light luminosity. Something like a damask pattern perhaps?

A blue overlay would work

I think just a few strands of a dark grey but not yet back would work with the hair.

Keep up the good work

I like the concept of combining the old with the new. I also like the in depth detail work on her modern clothing and the clash of the simplistic hair with her. However if you didn't tell me it was a geisha I wouldn't have known. I would have just thought her a beautiful modern girl. Their faces are painted but I think it would read more as a geisha if maybe some of her jewelry cued into the Asian culture more...maybe something with more print like a geisha ceremonial robe print on her shirt or maintaining the kimono look for the print on the shirt? Otherwise, beautifully done.

Thank you so much for writing a critique for me, I really appreciate the time and effort you've put into this (:
One thing I considered while drawing to make the transition more effective: If I had made all of her clothes in a minimalistic style like her hair, would the difference between old and new be more clear? That is a wonderful idea about the jewelry and patterned clothes, also (:
Thank you again for your input, it means so much to me!!

That would be a interesting concept, I bet it would be very interesting to see the minimalistic style for clothes too! That's a very creative idea And I really love all the details that you put into this drawing.

what real captivates me is her hair for some reason, it really draws attention to the face, which is gorgeous

Thank you so much I was hoping that the hair would do that.. I wanted to create a contrast between flat and more fleshed out (:

Hey, no need to apologize for life, nor for FINALS!

This is very beautifully done Lauren.  I really like it!  The concept is cool, the color palette very light and airy, and the model you chose (IU), such a very lovely girl, and that carried through to this as well.  I agree to a point with the first critique about tying together the theme by using geisha print or some sort of kimono 'throwback' for the shirt or jewelry, but not the second.

Thank you so much for your feedback (:
If I may ask, how would you recommend doing a geisha print? Still in the b&w, or in the blue? I'm curious to see how it would look but I don't want it to overrun the whole piece.
