Description ...are my two front teeth, my two front teeth...

Bigass (for me, a detail person) charcoal - 26" x 36"

School assignment, done from [link]

I tried not to concentrate on copying it exactly, but instead get the general skullness of it while avoiding accidentally coating my face in charcoal.

Last update (save one, perhaps) for a while; I'm going to DC in a few days. What with the time zones and all, I'm going to be seriously fucked up upon my return and I hope the other piece will be finished before I leave. But that's dubious, knowing my hatred for getting shit done on time and all.

And here is the obligatory statement that I took the picture at twilight and it looks awful and I adjusted the levels and signed it in Photoshop.

I love this D:
All the little details and the way the skull looks worn down in some parts is very nice.
Amazing job!

very nice. the paper has a texture, no? what type of paper? did you work the form more from an addition or subtraction standpoint?

Thanks for the watch--

I've no idea what kind of paper it was - whatever I grabbed first. It did have regular, oval pits all over than made it really, really annoying to get even shades.

I'm not sure what you mean by addition/subtraction, though...

handenbramilton In reply to Revonael [2008-12-14 05:03:09 +0000 UTC]

when i do my charcoal drawings, i'll cover an entire section of the paper entirely in charcoal and smudge it around really good to get it as black as I can, then i'll go in with an eraser pen to start the detail. that's subtractive - where the emphasis lies in the fact that you're taking something *off* of the paper and going back to white. additive would be putting charcoal to the paper with the intention of having that be as close to the final product that you want without taking an eraser to it.

know what i mean? i find that on really malleable paper like BFK Rives you can make it jet black with charcoal and take it right back to bright white with a vinyl eraser, and from that perspective I've found drawing has become alot more like sculpting with clay than something permanent, that you can modify it as you see fit without worrying about the consequences of an accidental mess-up.

so was your skull more of just adding charcoal to paper and working it without involving an eraser to a major degree? i'm really impressed with this drawing, regardless. the texture on the skull and depth of field blur are exceptional. keep it up.

Oh, I getcha.

In that case, I used an addition method. With whatever I use, it's pretty impossible to take the charcoal off the paper once it's on.

Doing it the other way around sounds a bit like scratchboard or just working on black with white chalk - something that could be an interesting challenge.

thank god you're done with it...every time I had to carry it up to art, somehow half the charcoal migrated onto me...and it's quite nice ^.^

But I got a plastic bag from Big D today so when you carry it up to art tomorrow, you'll remain charcoal free.

I'm such a great friend, ain't I?

Just ignore the fact it took me two weeks to get a goddam bag.
